Paint a house: make an impact
Nov 15, 2006

The volunteer event was part of the Denver Day of Impact.
Metro State students, alumni and staff teamed up on Saturday, Oct. 28, to give Creative Options, the early education center in Aurora for Cerebral Palsy of Colorado, a much-needed facelift.

Forty volunteers from Metro COOL (Campus Outreach and Opportunities for Learning), Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, the Christian Students Association, the Metro State Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni Relations met in Creative Options’ parking lot for an early morning consultation over steaming cups of coffee.

Metro COOL’s Erin Loften divided the tasks of scraping, raking leaves, shoveling snow and painting. At the end of the day the center had a sparkling white building and volunteers had a free Metro State t-shirt as well as the satisfaction of having made a difference.

Students, staff and alumni teamed up to spruce up Celebral Palsy of Colorado's early learning center in Aurora.
“It was a great gift to us,” said Jennifer Peitzmeier, risk management director of Cerebral Palsy of Colorado. “This way our money went right back to our kids and it made our building look happy again!” The 5,000-square-foot building, renovated eight years ago, houses classes for 105 preschool children.

Oct. 28 was National Make-A-Difference Day and the Metro Volunteers organization and Molson-Coors sponsored the local version of this event in the seventh annual Denver Day of Impact. Volunteers met all over the city at 35 nonprofit project sites to put up fences, paint shelters, build trails, feed the hungry and give whatever time and sweat was needed on behalf of the Denver community. After a vigorous morning, Johnson & Wales University hosted a party in the afternoon with free food, drinks and door prizes to celebrate everyone’s hard work.

Stefanie Carroll, assistant director in the Office of Alumni Relations, said this was the first time her office has joined forces with Metro COOL for what they hope will be an annual event.

Interested in helping out next year? Staff can contact Carroll at http://www.mscd.edu/~alumni/ or call 303-556-6935. Interested students should contact Metro COOL at http://studentactivities.mscd.edu/cool/ about this and other service opportunities.
