Laptop Encryption
April 16, 2007

Dear Colleagues:

In response to the high priority Dr. Jordan has assigned to securing college laptop computers, and in order to get all laptop computers secured prior to summer break, IT has revised and abbreviated the process for the laptops to encryption only. We will provide scanning software
(Spider) on the laptops, so that you can scan your own files for private information and delete it.

Beginning this week, IT representatives will schedule appointments with faulty and staff members to accommodate a pace of 20 to 25 laptops per day, at a more convenient location in the West Classroom building. Laptops will be returned within 8-24 hours. IT Customer Service representatives will contact you directly to schedule the equipment check-in day and time. To assist us in completing this project in the short time allowed, it is important that you to bring your laptop to us at the scheduled time. We will have loaner laptops available for your use if you need them.

Departments with a pool of laptops shared among the faculty, these laptops will not be encrypted. However, they will be re-imaged with a secure, "locked down" image. This means that faculty will not be able to save files locally on the laptop and will need to save their files to an external drive such as a flash drive. Flash drives will be available for those customers upon pick-up.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation and assistance in this process. If you have any questions, please call the Help Desk at 556-8325.

Sincerely,

George Middlemist
Interim Vice President of Information Technology
