Classes Taught: Voice

Thomas Erik Angerhofer’s versatile baritone is capable of capturing the tenderness of romantic leads, such as Emile deBecque in South Pacific, the vulgarity of villainous characters, like Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia, and the jovial spirit of comic personae, as in the Figaro of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. His other opera roles include: Peter in Hansel und Gretel, Somnus in Semele, Betto and Schicchi (cover) in Gianni Schicchi, L’horloge comtoise and Le chat in L’enfant et les sortileges, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Marquis de la Force and le Jiolier in Dialogues of the Carmelites, Anneas in Dido and Anneas, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Il Marito in Amelia goes to the ball, and Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Critics have praised Erik’s “powerful and sweet baritone – always on pitch and with enough breath to milk every nuance of the tunes” (Asheville Citizen-Times), and his crossover appeal has lead him to perform many leading musical theater roles, including: Raul in Phantom of the Opera, Antony and Sweeney in Sweeney Todd, Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, and The Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods. He is also well respected for his performances of light opera, which include Captain Corcoran, Sir Joseph, Dick Deadeye, and the Boatswain in H.M.S. Pinafore, Giuseppe in The Gondoliers, and Samuel in Pirates of Penzance. His singing has been described as “virile” and “honest”, with a “brilliant” upper range and a “balanced tone from top to bottom”.

Recognized as a compelling interpreter of concert works, Erik has performed a wide range of repertoire, including: Telemann’s Die Tageszeiten, Rameau’s Aquilon et Orithie, Handel’s Messiah, Purcell’s Come ye sons of Art, Copeland’s Old American Songs, Bach’s cantatas Ich habe genug and Gottes zeit ist die allerbeste zeit, Faure’s Requiem, and Bach’s Mass in B minor and Weinachts Oratorium. In addition to professional tours and concert appearances in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and England, Erik has appeared with professional opera companies and orchestras in Rochester, Buffalo, Ithaca, Syracuse, Fredonia, Erie, Brevard, Billings, Denver, Longmont, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Aspen.

Mr. Angerhofer earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York College at Fredonia (magna cum laude), where his studies included voice, vocal pedagogy, music education, and choral conducting. While attending SUNY Fredonia, he instructed voice class for both non-music majors and music education majors. He earned an M.M. in Voice Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he performed 10 opera roles in 8 operas over 6 semesters. At CU, he continued his studies of vocal pedagogy and taught both private voice lessons to undergraduate voice majors and voice class for music education and non-music majors. Erik is now working toward a doctorate in voice performance and opera stage direction at the University of Northern Colorado, where he is assistant director for main stage operas, as well as a director and producer of opera scenes programs.

A recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Angerhofer has held a teaching assistantship at CU Boulder, a graduate assistantship at UNC, an A.J. Fletcher Fellowship to perform and train at the Janicek Opera/Brevard Music Center, a scholarship to perform and study at the Aspen Opera Theater Center/Aspen Music Festival, as well as the following honors: School of Music Scholarship (UNC), Barbara M. Doscher Scholarship (CU), Sue Conrad and C. Dickson Titus Memorial Scholarship (CU), Dale R. Johnson Opera Scholarship (CU), School of Music Scholarship (CU), Nancy and Ted Anderson Performance Award (CU), Voice Faculty Scholarship (Fredonia), School of Music Service Award (Fredonia). He is also a past winner of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition (Great Lakes Region). Erik is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity.
