Faculty: Karen Lee-Terbeek
Ms Lee-Terbeek is Artistic Director and resident cellist for the Music at Saddle Rock chamber music series. Her musical career began at the age of 19 as cellist with the Tucson Symphony, while she was attending the University of Arizona. Her cello professor was Dr. Gordon Epperson. With her undergraduate degree in Cello Performance, she was hired by the Omaha Symphony as Assistant Principal Cello. While in Omaha she also held principal positions with Opera Omaha. As a graduate student she performed with the Dallas Opera and the Fort Worth Symphony.
After earning her Masters degree in Cello Performance under Lev Aronson at SMU in Dallas, Texas, she joined the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Cello, a position she held for 10 years. While in New Mexico she performed with the Santa Fe Opera. She has also served as Principal Cello of the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, and during the summer currently serves as Principal Cello with the Des Moines Metro Opera, a position she has held for over 10 years. She has also performed as guest Principal Cello with the Amarillo Symphony. Appointed Principal Cello with the Memphis Symphony in 1998, she now plays Principal Cello with the Colorado Opera Troupe. She plays part-time with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and is a member of the Boulder Philharmonic.
In the world of chamber music, Ms Lee-Terbeek has held the position of Associate Principal Cello in the Nebraska Sinfonia, and served as cellist with the Santa Fe Pro Musica, the Omaha String Quartet, the Ensemble of Santa Fe, Serenata of Santa Fe, Colorado Chamber Players, and the Columbine String Quartet. In Texas, she was resident cellist with the Perspectives New Music Ensemble.
The Colorado Council of the Arts selected her as a Young Audiences of Colorado Residency Artist for 2001-2003. She can be heard as solo cellist on many commercial recordings produced at Coupe Studios in Boulder, Colorado.
As of September 2006, Ms. Lee-Terbeek will begin her most recent appointment as cello instructor at Metropolitan State College of Denver. She will continue to maintain her private studio and remain active in the performing community.
