Faculty: Gene Roberts
Gene Roberts is the coordinator of Opera studies at Metropolitan State College of Denver. In training vocal artists, Roberts’ passion for the marriage of language and music is chairman of the board. In his dual role as voice teacher and director, Gene knows no greater joy than inspiring singers to dig deep, and discover that which inspired composition. No stranger to the stage, Roberts career has allowed him to meet people, another passion, throughout the US and Europe. Especially fond of contemporary works, Gene Roberts was privileged to sing the role of Mr. Eager in the premiere of A Room with a View by American composer, Robert Nelson at Des Moines Metro Opera, and the role of the Town Crier in the revised Houston premiere of Bilby’s Doll staged by Grammy Award winning composer Carlisle Floyd. Equally at home on the Musical Theater stage, Roberts was privileged to be a part of the Swiss premiere cast of Lloyd-Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, the world’s only dual language production of the work, being given in both English and German. In Germany, Gene enjoyed success as principal cast Beast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a role which he played over 500 times. Roberts’ favorite music of all is that of the late romantic German composers; his favorite way to spend his life – doing anything with his wife Gwen, and their three sons, Jake, Mitchell and Jeremiah.
