An emphasis in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences provides a sound background for a student pursuing careers in education, health care and vocational rehabilitation. Graduates in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences will have the prerequisite coursework to pursue a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology, which open careers in schools, community clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and practice. This emphasis area has been approved for students seeking licensure in Early Childhood or Elementary Education.

SPE 1010 (Public Speaking) is a prerequisite to THE 3200, SPE 2530, SPE 2890 and SPE 3740. BIO 1080 and 1090 (General Introduction to Biology and Lab) are prerequisites for BIO 2310. These courses are required for this major and may be used to fulfill General Studies Requirements.

Option B: Designed for student who are seeking licensure in Early Childhood, Elementary and/or Special Education.

Students who obtain all required licensure course work at MSCD may complete a Speech Communication: Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences major in 38 credit hours. A 42-credit hour major is required in the Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences concentration for nonlicensure students. Teacher education programs are currently undergoing review and may be modified during 2001-2002. Students seeking teacher licensure should read the treacher licensure sections of the current catalog, pages 217-232, and they should stay in regular contact with their advisors.
