Overview Of The Early Childhood Education Program

MSCD offers a licensure program in Early Childhood Education, which has been approved by CDE, and an added endorsement in Early Childhood Education (Preschool through Grade Three) for candidates licensing in other areas. There are four parts to this program:

  1. A major in an approved academic discipline.
  2. A minor in Early Childhood Education (needed to complete the program within 8 semesters)
  3. The professional Early Childhood Education sequence.
  4. General Studies requirements.

A Bachelor's degree in any major is accepted for students who already have a BA or BS.

Optional education minors are listed below.  Students who wish to complete the program within 8 semesters need to choose Early Childhood Education as a minor.  You may select any college approved minor.  (If you have a previous degree you do not need a minor.) Other education minors are:

Prerequisites

Read the prerequisites for each course in your college catalog.  In general, the faculty has tried to indicate which courses will best prepare you for the next course. This sequence should best prepare the student to meet or exceed the achievement expectations in each course.

 *** Classes may be taken during the summer to decrease the total amount of credits for each semester.  Many education classes are offered during the summer.

* During Semester 6, you need to attend the preliminary Student Teaching application meeting. The primary meeting will be held on the first Friday of the 7th semester from 3-5p.m. Student Teaching must be completed during Fall or Spring semester. The Student Teaching application deadline for Fall Student Teaching is the third Friday of February, and for Spring Student Teaching it is the third Friday of September. PLACE or PRAXIS content tests must be passed by the applicatoin deadline.
