Teams receive midterm grades
Donald Smith
Sports Reporter

It’s late in the season now and everything is getting exciting and stressful all at the same time. Like midterms, all of the fall teams have been tested by opponents and now they are waiting to see the results of all their hard work before finals (Or the playoffs). I have been watching them all season and here are my grades for each team and why.

Volleyball: (A) 18-4, 12-1 RMAC

This one was easy. If I were to have done this the past three seasons, I would’ve given them an “A” in all three seasons. The problem: every season they own the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and then . . . playoffs start. This season might be different, because they have two things in their favor: 1) all their seniors: Angela Golesh, Jessy Roy, Shawna Gilbert and Devon Herron are on the same page. 2) Talented freshman and sophomores. Honestly, the best way I can describe Renee Hazlewood, Stefanie Allison and Sheena McLaughlin is that they have been the perfect supporting cast to their senior teammates “final performances.”

Women’s Soccer (A) 14-0-1, 9-0-0 RMAC

Think about it! Could you really give a team with a perfect conference record anything less? Honestly, the only person on the field who isn’t playing like a superstar is . . . well . . . their goalkeeper Mandy Allen. Reason: she’s only seen 135 shots (nine shots a game).

This team is dominating opponents every game and if they avoid a late season letdown, they just might end up with a perfect season.

Men’s Soccer (B) 9-6-1, 3-4-1 RMAC

If you look at their record, you might wonder why it’s a “B” and not lower. But, if anybody came to any of their games, it would be easy to see why they are a “B” and not lower. This team never quits! This men’s squad has taken plenty of shots from me and from opponents and what do they do? RESPOND by taking their play to their opponents early and often. This team has a non-stop engine that needs to be re-energized from time to time, but their hunger, desire and heart might be the reason why they not only get in the RMAC playoffs, but also the reason they just might WIN the thing!

Nothing is for certain by any means for any of these teams, and if they get some balls to bounce their way, all of these teams will be making a run for their respective program’s first titles.
