The Bastard Squad will appear for the first time since Halloween on
Nov. 21 at the Lion’s Lair.
The Bastard Squad is made up of two Metro students, a Ph.D. candidate
at CU Boulder, and a self-described nerd.
Formed about a year and a half ago, the group sprang from a couple
of different bands.
The Bastard Squad’s Drummer Ty Lunsford, vocalist and guitarist
Craig Emter, and guitarist and vocalist Greg Wildermuth, all played
together in a band called The Louts.

The Bastard Squad’s bass player Stephanie Silsby described
this band as “a cow punk band.” Members of the Bastard
Squad were also in a band called Melinda Sclerosis, based in Laramie,
Wyo. Silsby said that Melinda Sclerosis’ music was a lot more
like the music the group plays now.
The band’s name came from The Young Ones, a show that was on
BBC. Silsby said that in one episode they had a band on called The
Bastard Squad.
“It’s a perfect name for us since we’re a bunch
of bastards,” Silsby said. “I mean that figuratively,
not literally. We all have parents that love us.”
Despite their diverse backgrounds, the band’s music can be
described as noisy rock’n’roll. Influenced by Turbonegro
and Minor Threat, as well as some old school punk, the band has a
rough feel to their music.
A couple of songs, one titled “Let it Burn” and the other,
“Bastard Squad Will Beat Your Ass,” can be found on the
band’s Web site as well. Harsh vocals and heavy rhythm lay down
a foundation for The Bastard Squad’s music.
The Bastard Squad holds practice in the basement of the Team Federal
house, where Wildermuth and Emter live. Wildermuth said things are
pretty peaceful in the group because they are all into different types
of music and all are open- minded. He said this also helps in making
the song writing go smoothly.
The hobbies of the band members are varied in more ways than just
music.
Silsby said hers are “anything to do with hotrods or motorcycles.”
Emter said he enjoys umpiring baseball, rooting for the Wyoming Cowboys
and gardening. Lunsford said he doesn’t have time for hobbies.
Although the local music scene in Denver isn’t really great
in Wildermuths’ opinion, The Bastard Squad keeps their music
going.
“You do it because you enjoy doing it, not because anybody
really cares,” Wildermuth said.
“You do it because you enjoy doing it, not because anbody really
cares,”
