CU raises money for high cause
by Dacia Cox

The Masters of Business Administration Student Organization, a UCD group, reached their goal of $2,500 for their scholarship fund for inter-city college hopefuls.

The scholarships, in the amount of $500 apiece, will be given to five students who will attend CU Denver’s business school.

Dolores Huerta, activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, signs posters for the UCD Student Activities Office Nov. 13. During her "Si' Se Puede!-Yes, It Can Be Done!" lecture in the Tivoli Turnhalle, Huerta encouraged a group of students from Longmont Heritage Middle School to continue their education and start thinking about college.

MBASO members set up a table in the North Classroom and distributed information about their fundraiser which was held at the Grizzly Rose on Nov.12.

Matthew Mueller, treasurer of the MBASO, said about $500 of the total goal was raised through donations from passing students and $1,500 came from an anonymous donor. The rest was raised at the Grizzly Rose event.

Mueller said about 300 people attended the event. He said he was hoping for 500-1000, but was happy that they reached their monetary goal anyway.

The Honda Metropolitan, donated by Sun Honda, was raffled off by the end of the event.

Other raffle items included a large mirror, Jack Daniel’s t-shirts and Stolichnaya Hats, as well as tickets to various Pepsi Center Events.

Bill and Kathy Repola, who own the Grizzly Rose, donated the building for the fundraiser. They offered singer Aubrey Collins as entertainment and provided dance lessons before the concert.
“We’re always open to fundraisers,” Bill Repola said.

This spring, the MBA Student Association is planning a fundraiser on a grander scale. Association President James Villarreal said they are hoping to organize an event with other campus associations. He said that on Auraria Campus it’s hard to get to know your fellow students and this may be a way to bridge that gap.

“I think in the spring we can get something really big,” Mueller said.

He said with all the different organizations on campus it’s difficult to obtain support for so many events, but if the organizations work together, it would be beneficial for everybody.

“All the credit goes to him…He did 99 percent of the work,” Villarreal said of Mueller.
