For the majority of Metro students, the fall semester coming to an
end is the beginning of a break from school before the ensuing spring
semester. However, for a small percent of the students, it means much
more.
On Dec. 14, more than 800 students are expected to graduate from
Metro in the Commencement Ceremony.
According to Metro’s Office of the Registrar, 953 students
have currently applied for graduation at the end of the semester.
It was also stressed that these students are considered graduation
candidates, as circumstances may prevent some from actually graduating.
“I would expect there to be a small drop-off,” Associate
Registrar Jeffrey W. Johnson said.
“Taking that into consideration, I would say that the number
of students graduating should be around 800 or so.”
This number would coincide with statistics from previous years of
students graduating from Metro in the fall.
Documents provided by the Office of Institutional Research at Metro
show very similar numbers for the number of students graduating in
the fall, dating back to 2000.
Last year, the number of students graduating in the fall accounted
for 40 percent of the year’s total of graduating seniors.
The Metro Fall 2003 Commencement Ceremony, which will occur on a
Sunday, will take place at the Colorado Convention Center, located
at 14th St. and California, across from the Auraria campus. The ceremony
will begin at 2:00 p.m.
Several parking lots at Metro, including the Tivoli parking lot,
will be open for graduating students and their guests at no charge.
Anyone planning to park in the garages the area surrounding the Colorado
Convention Center can expect to pay between $5 and $7.
The ceremony will begin at the same time as the opening kickoff of
the Denver Broncos’ home game against the Cleveland Browns,
which could provide traffic difficulties.
To avoid such problems, Johnson said anyone planning to attend the
ceremony should allow themselves additional time to arrive.
According to a letter sent out by the Office of the Registrar to
all graduation candidates, there will be no rehearsal for the ceremony.
Johnson says that students can expect to be presented with their
degrees and congratulated by several people while on the stage during
the ceremony.
“Degrees will be presented to the students by the chair of
their major’s department,” Johnson said. “Then,
they will meet with Metro’s dean and school president.”
