Success blesses fall teams

The fall season here at Metro couldn’t have been better! For starters, all three teams were Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions, all were able to have young players step up late in the season and all three teams look like they’ll be great again next season. This might have been the best season ever in Metro fall athletics.

Women’s Soccer

Other than the fact that Metro’s Sports Information Assistant Aaron Buemi will stop talking about his “lucky seeds,” I really hate to see this season end. It looked like the team had all the momentum in their favor going into the quarterfinals before they were upset by University of California- San Diego 3-2. If there was ever a bad time to lose a first game it was in the NCAA Tournament.

This team had everything going for it both defensively and offensively, but like Chris Berman says: “That’s why they play the game.”

Women’s Volleyball

I swear! Cheering for the women’s team is kind of like playing the scratch ticket lotto games.

The first one comes up a cherry (winning the RMAC Regular Season Championship), the second one a cherry (winning the RMAC Tournament) and then the lemon! (losing in the Regional Tournament) The thing about this is that it has happened for the past three seasons!

Metro's Shawna Gilbert spikes the ball into the waiting hands of Rockhurst University's Heidi Specht during the Roadrunner's 3-2 loss in the NCAA Division II Regional Round at the Event Center in Denver Nov. 21. The 'Runners finished their season 27-6

Even worse, the team that defeated the Roadrunners last season in three games, was the same team to defeat them this year, only the Roadrunners would extend it two additional games instead of being swept. Good job!

I know this may sound mean, but if you play all season in order to host a tournament, could you possibly go ahead and win the thing!

Anyway, the only difference between this season and prior years is that Devon Herron will not return to lead the team back to the playoffs again; not this time, her hour glass is empty, her time is done and this team must now find another spark within its program to lead the team next season.

Men’s Soccer

You have to love the fact that the NCAA did what no other opposing team in the month of November could do … eliminate them.

The Metro Men’s team saw their season end not on a header past Eric Butler in overtime, not by free kick in the box with only two seconds left or not even on an own goal. This team was eliminated by a voting committee, who felt their magical season should end.

The men’s team had an incredible month of undefeated soccer, a month of seeing seniors Alex Grecu, Corey Gonzalez, Jeff Manson and Butler play as if there were no tomorrow. They all deserved to play until they were beaten, but sadly, a group of NCAA voters decided they weren’t.

Finally, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, because now that finals are coming up it might be the only thing you’ll enjoy until Santa comes.
