Gibby Haynes, we have a problem

by Chip Boehm
The Metropolitan

The Butthole Surfers arrived on the scene in the 1980s from California by way of Texas. On stage, the band's live performances were a musical hurricane of dense instrumental noise and distorted megaphonic vocals backed by disturbing and intense visual projections. Fronting this psychotic cyclone was Gibby Haynes.

Haynes is back on the road with a new side project, Gibby Haynes and His Problem. Their first album was recently released on Surfdog Records and they will arrive at the Larimer Lounge this Saturday.

Taking a more electronic approach to the songwriting process, the band uses laptop computer programs. SONAR 3 and Project5 will be used to enhance the backing tracks for their live shows as well as the album. The software was used to create analog synth lines, loops and triggered samples.

Expect a chaotic set of new material such as "Kaiser," "I Need Some Help" and "Redneck Sex." The song titles alone tell you to expect a night of absurd lyrical wit.

As Haynes himself says, "I don't know what's going to happen. Maybe that's the scary part."

Be sure to lend support to this latest spectacle-it is sure to entertain. The venue's size along with Haynes' newly shorn locks should allow a glimpse directly into the eye of the storm.

Gibby Haynes and His Problem plays Sept. 18 at Larimer Lounge, 2721 Larimer St. Tickets are $12. Doors open at 9 p.m. Info at www.larimerlounge.com
