The Metropolitan takes 2nd place in national awardThe National Newspaper Association, which consists of more than 3,200 community newspapers across the United States, named The Metropolitan the second best college newspaper in the nation at the organization's annual convention in Denver Friday. Judges complimented the newspaper for its "effective line to campus diversity" and that the "writing reflects effective reporting." The Metropolitan was one of hundreds of newspapers at the convention. The Orion, the student newspaper for the California State University at Chico, took first place in general excellence in the college division. The Southwestern College Sun, the student newspaper of Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif., came in third.
Campus Democratic groups combine forces
The Auraria Young Democrats and the Democrats of Auraria, two similar Democratic groups on campus, merged this past weekend to form one group. The two groups decided it would be better to combine their resources by becoming the Democrats of Auraria, said Metro student Nathan Pitman, who was co-president of the Auraria Young Democrats and will now be co-president of the new group. "We're going to be able to now take the resources for the two groups and combine those and make them a much larger group in order to further the goals and the beliefs of the college Democrats on campus," Pitman said. He said his group was planning to focus more on the national election while the Democrats of Auraria were looking to focus more on local issues. He said now those two goals can be achieved together. "Some of the goals are different," he said, "but we thought that the best way to accomplish those goals was for a merger."
Department of Education gives Metro $9.5 million
The United States Department of Education has awarded Metro a check for $9.5 million as part of a competitive grant. Assistant Secretary of Education Sally Stroup traveled to Denver Tuesday to award the largest federal grant the college has ever received. The Teacher Quality Enhancement program grant will be used for the Secondary Teacher Enhancement Project, in which Metro, along with teachers from Denver Public Schools, will teach and mentor secondary teacher education students. Stroup said the grant is highly competitive and congratulated Metro, DPS, the business community, as well as CEO of Benson Mineral Group and Metro Board of Trustees Chairman Bruce Benson, for winning the grant at a press conference Tuesday in St. Cajetan's Center. compiled by Clayton Woullard
