Metro sophomore midfielder Preston Borrego gets tackled by Embry-Riddle junior back Troy Elliott on Saturday Oct. 9. The Roadrunners stomped the Eagles 10-0, bringing their record to 9-3 overall.
"We just wanted to come out with a lot of energy in the first ten, fifteen minutes (of play) and put 'em away; make it an easy day for ourselves," said sophomore forward Phillip Owen. "And fortunately, we were able to do that (as) we scored three goals in the first fifteen minutes; so, (we) took a little pressure off ourselves,"
In a one-sided scoring game, Owen had a hat trick with an assist while sophomore midfielder David Gordon added two goals and an assist
"We had a lot of success," Gordon said. "I think our dribbling game was definitely on; we had the space and we took it to 'em."
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school received a taste of Division II dominance, as the Roadrunners out shot the Eagles 23-5 in the first half, which resulted in four Metro goals. In the second half, the numbers were 21-2, leading to the final six tallies of the match.
Because of the 'Runners excellent play, many reserve players were able to get some time in the game as well, taking advantage of playing time that might be scarce down the last leg of the season.
"Well, it was kind of nice after playing Incarnate (Word) actually," Owen said. "So we have a little break, come out, kick around, have some fun... it's nice to have one of these games, but next week we've got (Colorado School of) Mines so (we're) looking forward to that."
After their impressive victory over the Eagles, the Roadrunners now look forward to taking their two-game win streak into the final three games of their nine-game home stand, when they face conference foes: Colorado Mines (Oct. 15) and Colorado Christian (Oct. 17) then finish their home stand against non-conference opponent Montana State-Billings (Oct. 18). |
