The second ranked Metro women's soccer team finished their home season last weekend with a 6-0 win on Friday over Mesa State and a 3-0 shutout against Fort Lewis on Sunday.
The 'Runners (16-1, 11-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) started the weekend with a 6-0 shutout over the Mesa State Mavericks (3-12-2, 2-7-2 RMAC) Friday, Oct. 22. Three of the goals came from sophomore forward Kylee Hanavan, who recorded her sixth hat trick of the season. Her first goal came five minutes into the game, setting the offensive pace for the match.
"A lot of people can score on this team," Hanavan said. "Our defense stepped it up and our all-around play was there."
The Roadrunners overwhelmed Mesa State by out-shooting the Mavericks 22-4. Senior midfielder Ymara Guante scored three points on the day with one goal and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Kiefer and senior back Elin Otter each scored a goal in the big win on Friday.
Sunday, Oct. 24, as the Roadrunners beat Fort Lewis 3-0, Metro took advantage of a 24-4 lead in shots and an 8-1 margin in corner kicks to overcome the Skyhawks. The 'Runners went into the half leading 1-0 off the eighth goal of the season from junior midfielder Marina MacDonald. Guante scored her 10th goal of the year and sophomore midfielder Shelley Radosevich got her fourth goal to bring the score to 3-0.
"It's just continued hard work as a team," MacDonald said. "Offensively and defensively, we're strong. We've been good technically."
Sunday was senior day, and five players were honored in their final game at Auraria Field. Midfielders Guante and Adraianne Almaraz, along with defenders Otter, Meisha Pyke, and Bonnie Thompson, played their last regular season home game.
"The seniors have been a big part of our success," said head coach Danny Sanchez. "They've been catalysts for turning around Metro State soccer from where it was a few years ago."
With the home schedule complete, the Roadrunners' last hurdle on the road to the postseason is against Regis. Regis is coming into the game with a 15-2 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the conference. Since losing to Metro early in the season, Regis has won 15 straight and is ranked ninth in the nation. The showdown takes place at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Regis Field.
"The whole season comes down to Wednesday as far as the conference goes," Sanchez said. "We expect that they've improved and we've improved and that it will be a very good game."
