WORKING
IT

Q: I am about to ask my boss for a raise. What
would you suggest I do to receive it?
A: A recent USA Today survey reported that 50
percent of people asking for a raise were told no. Robin Ryan,
a career
author, suggests
you attempt to avoid these fatal mistakes:Assuming longevity entitles
you to a raise. Threatening to quit or refusing to complete a project
unless your demands are met. Stating others got raises and you
should get one, too. Try this, instead, quantify your worth and
provide proof of it. Also, practice a persuasive pitch and, please,
select an opportune time when the boss is emotionally available
to hear your proposal.

to your career questions every week in this column.
