WORKING
IT
By Gary Boley • gboley@mscd.edu
Gary Boley is the Metro Director of Career Services and will respond
to your career questions every week in this column.
Q.What
are some great ways to locate open positions besides reviewing
the want ads?
A.
Only 18 percent of all hires are from want ads on the Web
or hard copy! Approach your employer of choice in a prospecting
fashion . . . known as sales. Do your homework on them and
know why they need your talents, then make your pitch or
submit your proposal. The percentage of success climbs to
43 percent! Discard the old ways of applying and become excellent
at employing a new set of strategies and tools. Also, please
follow up in a week after approaching your future employer
because they expect it. If the idea of selling your skills
does not appeal to you, remember that may not matter because
the competition may have no problem leaving their comfort
zones to do it.

Metropolitan welcomes all letters from Metro students,
