The first Go Metro State Downtown 5K race took place this Sunday
at the Auraria campus.
More than 200 participants from around the community signed up. The
youngest participant was 9, and the oldest was 64. Proceeds from
the race went to Metro’s cross country team.
“ (The) turnout was great for a first-year race,” Metro
cross country coach Peter Julian said.
Among those who ran were Metro President Stephen Jordan and Douglas
Samuels, vice president for student services. Jordan and Samuels finished with
times of 25:53 and 23:19, respectively. Julian said they were “bringing
it” and not just out there to be political.
“ I might have to recruit them,” Julian said.
The winner of the men’s division was Clint Wells, who finished
with a time of 14:46. In the women’s division, Paige Higgins won with a
time of 17:59.
“ It’s a good job of setting a winning tradition for
Metro,” cross country team captain Josh Tate, also a senior human performance
and sport major, said.
Julian said he hopes the turnout will triple next year. He also wants
Metro to be established as a major campus in the 21st century.
“ This Metro is not the Metro your father went to,” he
said.
