Metro player Andre Nilsson returns to Colorado Christian player Jameson
Dillon in their match Saturday. Nilsson won the set 6-2, 6-0, helping Metro go
on to beat the Cougars 9-0. Nilson and Riley Meyer are currently ranked 20th
in the Fila Collegiage Tennis National Doubles Rankings.
The Metro men and women’s tennis team each split a pair
of matches on Saturday at Auraria Courts, sweeping Colorado Christian in division
play but dropping their matches against Colorado College.
Both teams swept Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Colorado
Christian 9-0. The Roadrunner men fell 7-2 to Colorado College
while the women were swept 9-0 in the loss.
The Colorado Christian men were understaffed from the start,
bringing only four players to the men’s match and three against the women.
Metro senior Andre Nilsson and sophomore Riley Meyer swept the first men’s
doubles match, 8-0, and junior Will Meyer and sophomore Sean Carlton followed
suit. The doubles win was the tenth straight for Nilsson and Riley Meyer.
The Cougars’ Jameson Dillon took two games against Nilsson
in singles play to log the only small victory of the morning for Colorado Christian.
Nilsson swept the second set, 6-0, for the win.
Riley Meyer, Carlton and senior Jacob Ratliff swept their opponents
in straight sets with Mark Milner and Will Meyer winning by default.
Metro freshman Miriam Evangelista and junior Tia Mahoney swept
the Cougars 8-0 in doubles play. Evangelista, along with freshman Mitra Hirad
and sophomore Ragnhild Kinoshita, won three singles matches with the other
three won by default.
The afternoon match proved to be much tougher competition as
the Colorado College Tigers mauled the Roadrunners.
Juniors Drew Machholz and Mark Milner provided the only wins
of the afternoon for Metro. Machholz defeated the Tigers’ Perry Wright,
6-2, 6-4, while Milner swept Alex Brandfon in the win.
“ For me personally, it’s just a mental thing,” Nilsson
said. “For some reason, I couldn’t focus at all and I think that’s
the main reason I couldn’t get it together.”
Starting April 12, the ‘Runners face five matches in
four days, all against RMAC rivals.
With the weekend split, the Metro men move to 10-6 (2-0 RMAC),
while the women fall to 2-13 (1-1 RMAC). |
