Metro volleyball coach Joan McDermott and standout freshman outside hitter Michelle Edwards are happy with the awards they have won, but not all together satisfied. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference named McDermott its co-Coach of the Year, and Edwards as Newcomer of the Year on Nov. 15.
Still, McDermott and Edwards arenât all smiles. They are a bit miffed that no Metro player made the first team all-conference team and ăshockedä that no Roadrunner made the first team of the East Division squad.
ăEither the vote got spread between our players, or someone voted us low,ä McDermott said. |

McDermott shares her award with Regis University coach Frank Lavrisha. And she gives her team the credit it didnât get from the RMAC coaches who vote on the awards.
ăItâs a credit to our team,ä McDermott said. ăIt was a nice honor.ä
Edwards is low-key when discussing her accolades, but she isnât afraid to tell it like she sees it when it comes to her teammates.
ăI was mad,ä Edwards said. ăWe deserve some respect, and no one is giving us any.ä
McDermott and Edwards are especially baffled when it comes to what they view as a snubbing of junior Audra Littou.
Littou ranks among conference leaders in several categories, including kills and digs, but was left off the team in favor of players from schools with lesser stats.
McDermott said she has spoken to conference officials about retooling the system used in deciding the all-conference teams.
Edwards led the Roadrunners in kills with 523 and attack percentage at .241. McDermott earned her award by taking a mediocre team the past two seasons and producing a unit that has only lost eight matches this year. |
