Internship Info:
These are multi-task opportunities that will provide practical experience in leadership of a specialty area within recreation services at Campus Recreation at Auraria.

Each internship position provides assistance and support to the department through the delivery of recreation services on the Auraria Campus, a tri-institutional urban college community comprised of over 35,000 students, faculty and staff.

These internships include comprehensive, hands on experiences that provide for learning by the intern and service delivery for Campus Recreation at Auraria.

Currently, there are three areas of specialization prospective interns may choose from:
Fitness / Wellness
Facility / Recreational Services
Outdoor Leadership
There is flexibility to accommodate the intern’s learning goals while taking into account departmental needs.

As members of CRA support staff, interns will attend staff meetings and will be required to hold weekly office hours. In addition, interns will be expected to work a variety of hours including mornings, evenings, and weekends. Candidates must possess excellent written and oral skills, enjoy face-to-face contact with student participants and must be highly organized and possess excellent planning skills.

Areas of Specialization Responsibilities:

Fitness and Wellness Programming and Management intern
The intern will be responsible for assisting the department in providing fitness assessments, group exercise instruction, and management of personal training programs. The intern will be responsible for assisting in the planning of department and campus special events such as Disability Awareness Day, Spring Fling Fitness Fair, and CRA orientations. The intern will be responsible for supporting marketing strategies that allow for creative and technological approaches in promoting CRA to students, faculty, and staff of the Auraria Campus. The intern will maintain and update information for CRA bulletin boards, serve on the CRA web team committee, and will be responsible for creation and dissemination of fitness program flyers and schedules.


Facility and Recreational Services Management intern
Duties will include student supervision and activity scheduling of a multi-purpose facility. The training and supervision of student employees will promote external/internal customer service designed to integrate, educate and prepare fellow peers for the multitude of variables involved in supporting and managing a comprehensive recreation program. The intern will be responsible for supporting marketing strategies that allow for creative and technological approaches in promoting CRA to students, faculty, and staff of the Auraria Campus. The intern will act as a student liaison for the department and will be expected to support tri-institutional programs and activities on the Auraria Campus.


Outdoor Recreation Management Intern
This position will work closely with the Assistant Director to identify, develop and implement outdoor leadership programs that foster student involvement, enhance leadership skills and encourage active, inclusive, and diverse program participation. Specific activities and levels of leadership are to be based the intern’s skills, training and experience. These activities might include low element challenge course leadership, leading and teaching rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, backpacking, hiking, ice climbing, environmental education, winter mountaineering and mountain biking. Other activities may include participating in equipment purchases, planning, rental shop supervision, facility planning and supervision, driving, supervising staff, conducting trainings, posting information to the web, marketing, and other duties as assigned.

Reporting Structure
These positions report directly to the appropriate Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.

Qualifications
All interns must have experience and/or coursework in the appropriate field. Each intern must have experience with and is expected to work with people of diverse backgrounds. First Aid/CPR certification required. Supervisory experience is preferred. Some experience with marketing, publicity, public relations, etc. is preferred. Prefer: Graduate students or students who have already obtained a bachelor’s degree who may be seeking additional coursework. Students who have attained the level of senior will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional qualifications within specialty areas:

Fitness/Wellness Specialty
Strong background or interest in the field of recreational services specific to fitness and wellness programming. Applicants should have 1 – 2 year’s experience, preferably teaching group exercise and or personal training in a university setting. Preferred: Coursework in exercise science, sport management or related field.


Facility/Recreational Specialty
Strong background or interest in the field of recreational services. Prefer: students seeking or who have received degrees in Recreational and Fitness Management, Business Administration, Communications, or related fields.

Outdoor Leadership Specialty
A strong background or interest in the field of recreational services specific to outdoor leadership programming. Course work in leadership development, outdoor recreation, physical education or related field. Two years of experience in a minimum of one of the following disciplines: challenge course leadership, teambuilding, rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, backpacking, hiking, ice climbing, environmental education, winter mountaineering, canoeing, rafting, or mountain biking. Preferred experience - professional experience teaching and leading traditional aged college students and/or adults in one or more of the activities listed above.

Duration of internships
Each is by arrangement
Up to 10 months: August through May (Flexible: Yes) Maximum of 40 hrs a week

Stipend
$0 - $7.50 per hour contingent upon work and academic experience.

The Auraria Campus is a tri-institutional, urban-commuter campus located in the heart of downtown Denver, with an overall student population of 35,000 students. Resources for identifying financial aid, off-campus housing, and a variety of academic and student services will be made available.
