Dean's Message/Welcome
Welcome to the School of Professional Studies web pages at the Metropolitan State College of Denver! Please take some time to peruse the departments, majors, minors, and other offerings within the School. With a wide variety of disciplines to choose from, you are sure to find something of interest to you!
Although the School is quite diverse in its offerings, the focus is on outstanding education opportunities for our students. The departments within the School integrate liberal arts and sciences with theory and application in the professional disciplines. This mission is achieved with classroom study and through many unique field placements, internships, and teaching placements made each semester where our students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills that they have learned within the classroom.
The school is comprised of eleven academic departments and five centers. The departments include: Aviation and Aerospace Science, Criminal Justice and Criminology, Engineering Technology, Health Professions, Hospitality, Meeting, and Travel Administration, Human Performance and Sport, Human Services, Industrial Design, Nursing, Teacher Education, and Technical Communication and Media Production. Four centers, Center for Addiction Studies, Center for Effective Interventions, Center for High-Risk Youth Studies, and Nonprofit Organization Administration are housed in the Department of Human Services. Because of the strong emphasis on both academics and practical experience, the School of Professional Studies is attractive to students who are new to academics, continuing students searching for a career-oriented education path, or professionals desiring an upgrade in their skills.
Our graduates are second to none, and obtain jobs or earn admission to graduate schools of their choice. Graduates from the School of Professional Studies enjoy careers in diverse settings, as teachers, pilots, nurses, hotel and restaurant managers, meeting planners, police and parole officers, mental health counselors, recreational therapists, sport managers, technical writers, and in engineering design to name just a few. Not only do students graduate with employer-identified skills specific to their chosen career, they receive a broad educational background that enables them to pursue post-graduate studies. Opportunities for advanced study are abundant in the fields of law, communications, education, allied health professions, mental health fields, and more.
The School of Professional Studies is fortunate to have outstanding faculty and professionals who have developed many skills and abilities that they share with their students. Faculty have expertise in their field not only by virtue of their attained degree but also from "real-world" experience. Most full-time faculty members have earned doctorate degrees. Thus students can be assured they are receiving top-quality instruction they can put to use in their chosen field.
Please feel free to contact us in the dean’s office or any of the department members for more information. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you to reach your educational and professional goals!
