Centers

Four of the five centers located in the School of Professional Studies are housed in the Department of Human Services:

The Center for Addiction Studies
The Center for Addiction Studies offers four programs: a counselor training program in drugs, alcohol, and addictive behavior counseling (subject to ADAD CAC certification requirements); a concentration in drug, alcohol and addictive behaviors; a counselor training program in domestic violence counseling (fulfilling state certification requirements);a concentration in domestic violence counseling.

The Center for High Risk Youth Studies
The Center for High Risk Youth Studies offers both a concentration for the human services degree and a certificate of completion program. The center prepares the human services professional to work in a variety of high risk youth program locations including outpatient counseling, community-based living, or institutional settings. This concentration includes the state required certification program to become an "Alcohol and Drug Prevention Generalist." Students are also encouraged to pursue alcohol and drug certification as part of their degree programs due to the strong overlap between high-risk youth behaviors and substance abuse. Many of the required courses to do so are included in the concentration.

The Center for Nonprofit Organization Administration
The Center for Nonprofit Organization Administration offers both a concentration for the human services degree and a certificate of completion program. This concentration provides both degree seeking and career advancement professionals with the academic background and management skills to become effective managers in a variety of nonprofit settings.

The Center for Effective Interventions
The Center for Effective Interventions (CEI), formerly the Colorado MST Support Services Office, was created in December 2000. Beginning with a mission to disseminate Multisystemic Therapy throughout Colorado, the office has grown to also provide support and training to MST teams in New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, and Oklahoma. Currently we support 30 MST teams in 15 agencies.

In addition, CEI is in the process of developing relationships with other evidence-based and promising program models. To date we have developed working agreements with Functional Family Therapy and Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care. CEI works with communities and agencies providing technical assistance leading to the selection of models of practice to create or enhance a continuum of research-based practices. Specific activities include building a proper program foundation based on community support and viable funding and conducting site assessments that lead to licensure of providers. We also have the capacity to provide ongoing support and training and outcome monitoring to ensure fidelity to a chosen model of practice.

The last center is housed in the Department of Teacher Education:

The Teacher Education Center
The Teacher Education Center (TEC) is located in Central West Classroom 136 and performs essential administrative functions for all of the Teacher Education Programs. The Student Teaching Center, which is administratively part of the TEC, is located in West Classroom 141. The TEC manages all procedural steps and processes related to students moving through the teacher education program from onset to licensure, ensuring quality and equity. The four key functions of the Teacher Education Center are: provisional/permanent admission to all teacher education programs; ongoing monitoring of student progress through the teacher education programs; application to student teaching for all teacher education programs; and recommendation to the Colorado Department of Education for licensure.
