International Student Admissions Application

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

This application is for use by prospective Metropolitan State College of Denver (Metro State) students who are or will be in the United States on nonimmigrant visas (F, J, H, B, etc.). Applicants who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugee, asylee, or undocumented should complete the regular application for admission, available from the Office of Admissions.


GENERAL INFORMATION
We are pleased that you are applying for admission to Metropolitan State College of Denver (Metro State). Please read the following information carefully before completing the application. We will not process an application until all documentation has been received including the application, application fee of $40, proof of English proficiency, financial documentation, and all transcripts (in original language and English translation). To ensure timely notification, be sure to fill out the application completely.

This application is for those who are or will be in the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas (F, J, H, B, etc.). Applicants who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugee, asylee, or undocumented must complete the regular Application for Admission, available from the Office of Admissions. Metro State is currently only authorized to issue I-20’s for F-1 visa students and accompanying dependents (who will request F-2 visas as part of your F-1 visa application). We are not authorized to issue IAP-66’s for J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa students.

There are two application deadlines for International Student Applications. Applicants who are applying from their home country or are not currently in the US on a student (F-1) or work visa, the application deadlines are June 1st for fall semester, November 1st for spring semester and March 1st for summer semester. The application deadline for currently in status transfer F-1 students and work visa applicants is 5 weeks before the fall and summer semester begins and November 21st for the Spring 2009 semester. If you are ineligible for admission or admitted but do not enroll for the stated term, your file will remain active for one year from your original term of application. After that time, a new application, fee and all required credentials must be resubmitted for continued admission consideration.

PERSONAL/DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

  1. Use your complete legal name. Do not use nicknames.
  2. If you have a U.S. social security number please provide it here, it will be used for identification purposes only. All applicants are assigned a student identification number. If you have previously applied or attended Metro State please provide your former Metro State assigned identification number.
  3. Per SEVIS regulations foreign mailing address information is required for all F-1 visa students
  4. A complete birth date is required. If you are converting your birth date from another calendar to the Julian calendar, make sure you provide consistent information on all U.S. educational or immigration documents.

PLANS
Indicate the major field you intend to study. Place the appropriate three-letter major code in the boxes. We are unable to issue the I-20 without a declared major.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

  1. Applicants are required to show official proof of English proficiency in the form of a score of at least 72 on the internet-based (iBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (equivalent to a 200 on the computer-based TOEFL (CBT) and/or 533 on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT)). An official TOEFL score, sent directly from TOEFL Services in New Jersey to Metro State, is required. Please indicate Metro State's institution code of 4505 when requesting your score to be sent, or when you register to take the exam. Scores older than 2 years are not acceptable.   2. The TOEFL is not required for applicants who (a) hold an associate degree from an American community college, (b) have graduated from an American high school that they attended at least two years, (c) have passed a U.S. General Education Development (GED) test, or (d) are lifetime residents of Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the United Kingdom.
  3. If you are applying for admission on a visa other than F, please contact International Student Admissions by phoning 303-556-3058 for possible alternatives to the TOEFL.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

  1. Metropolitan State College of Denver is a public-supported college. There are no academic scholarships or financial aid for applicants attending on nonimmigrant visas. Most students on visas will pay nonresident tuition.
  2. Affidavits of support and bank letters, indicating a minimum balance of $27,200 and the currency domination, must be original (NO faxes) and current, i.e., no more than six months old from the day classes begin. For the Affidavit of Support, Metro State requires a simple letter signed and dated by your sponsor stating that they ___________ (sponsor name) will cover all your __________________ (student name) expenses while you attend Metro State.
  3. If you will be living with a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident and this party signs a statement that you will be living with them, and that you will not be charged room and board expenses, the amount of financial support documentation will be reduced to $21,000.
  4. If you will be accompanied by dependents, additional living expenses in the amount of $6,000 for your spouse and $5,000 for each child must be documented.
  5. Applicants on visas who are not on government scholarships are required to pay their first semester tuition and fees in full after being admitted but prior to registering for courses. However, you should not pay this advance tuition until your have been officially admitted to the college.
  6. For possible athletic scholarships, please contact the appropriate coach. These scholarships normally cover only tuition and occasionally fees and books. Additional financial support documentation for the remainder of the total expenses for the academic year will be required as detailed above.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

  1. Foreign educational records include transcripts of marks, certificates, and/or diplomas. Unless the school or Ministry of Education issues the document in English, both the original language and certified English translation of each document are required.
  2. If possible, please have the school or Ministry send official transcripts directly to Metro State. If this is not possible, please send certified copies of the documents. Once on campus, original, official documents must be presented for verification.
  3. When applicable, official U.S. high school transcripts, ACT or SAT results, and/or GED results must be sent directly from the school/agency to Metro State.

POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

  1. Please indicate the complete name(s) of the college/university. Do not abbreviate. If the foreign college is part of a larger university, please indicate the university name also.
  2. College/university transcripts may be required if secondary school education is not considered equivalent to high school graduation in the United States, or to waive the TOEFL requirement using the American community college associate degree exemption.
  3. Students having no foreign college/university experience, and who have completed at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of transferable credits from an accredited American college or university, will not be required to provide foreign secondary school records when the American college/university transcript is received by our office.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR A TRANSFER CREDIT EVALUATION

  1. United States college/university transcripts must be sent directly to Metro State from the issuing institution. U.S. High School/College transcripts and/or test scores should be mailed directly from the institution to P.O. Box 173362, Campus Box 44, Denver, CO 80217-3362
  2. If possible, please have foreign colleges/universities send transcripts directly to Metro State. If this is not possible, send certified copies of documents. Once on campus, you must present original, official documents, including any diplomas, for verification.
  3. Additionally, foreign secondary school credentials are required before foreign college/university transcripts will be evaluated for credit.

CERTIFICATION/SIGNATURE

  1. All applicants on student (F-1) visas must complete the information on their current/last school/college attendance and, if applicable, occupational practical training (OPT).
  2. Your electronic signature, date, email address and box check certification are required for submission.
  3. Payment of the nonrefundable $40 application fee is required of all applicants. To submit the application online you must include credit card information. If you are not paying by credit card, please print out this application and mail it to Metropolitan State College of Denver, International Student Admissions, P.O. Box 173362, Campus Box 16, Denver, CO 80217-3362 with a check or money order for $40 US. International Student applications submitted without payment of the required $40 application fee will not be processed. The only exception to the application fee requirement is for readmission applications. A readmission applicant is a person who has previously completed courses at Metro State paying tuition at our college.

Academic Calendar/Application Deadline

The academic calendar consists of two 16-week semesters and an optional 10-week summer semester. Applicants who are applying from their home country or are not currently in the US on a student (F-1) or work visa, the application deadlines are June 1st for fall semester, November 1st for spring semester and March 1st for summer semester.

CHECKLIST OF MATERIALS TO BE SUBMITTED

Documents may be submitted following the application and fee; however, all required materials must be received before an admissions decision can be made. Once your application has been determined admissible, you will be sent either the INS Form I-20 or SEVIS transfer form for currently in status transfer F-1 students. If applying from abroad, you must present the INS Form I-20 to the U.S. embassy/consulate with a valid passport, proof of payment of the $200 I-901 fee and separate financial support documentation to request the student (F-1) visa to enter the United States.

After acceptance to the College and before you register for classes you must:

  1. Bring your passport (and dependents' passport, if applicable that includes current visa, I-94 and I-20 ID for verification and copying.
  2. Make an Advance Tuition Payment for your entire first semester tuition and fees (a minimum of 12 semester hours for fall or spring semester - summer semester can be less than 12 hours). If you are on scholarship this advance payment may not be required.
  3. Make a reservation to attend an International Student Orientation session.
  4. Complete the "Next Steps" required of all new students. Specifically all students new to Metro State are required to attend a "regular" student orientation, complete assessment tests and obtain academic advising before they register for classes. Possible exceptions for U.S. college/university transfer students to the assessment tests and academic advising requirements will be determined after Metro State receives and evaluates the U.S. college/university transcripts. Once on campus, all students new to the college who are under 20 years of age and/or have never attended a U.S. college are required to attend an orientation and assessment session and obtain academic advising before they register for classes. Information on these sessions is available in the online class schedule.
