Alternative Licensure Program Special Education Licensure Only (ALP SED)
ALP SED is a two year program designed for candidates teaching special education.
Prior to Enrollment, ALP SED candidates must:
- Meet Colorado Department of Education ALP Requirements
ALP SED Program Year 1:
- Attend two-week orientation in July
- Attend MSU Denver classes/Complete Special Education coursework
- Demonstrate Proficiency on all benchmarks from the Performance-Based Standards for Colorado Special Education Generalist
- Complete four-week summer practicum at end of year 1
ALP SED Program Year 2:
- Attend MSU Denver Classes/Complete Special Education coursework
- Complete Teacher Work Sample and Portfolio
- Pass Special Education PLACE assessment
- Complete district induction program
- Obtain District recommendation to Colorado Department of Education for Initial Special Education Generalist License
Curriculum:
Teachers enrolled in ALP SED complete 48 hours of special education coursework during the two-week orientation in July of the first year, at weekly classes for two years and during a four-week summer practicum between years one and two. Teachers will be eligible for the Special Education Generalist License from the Colorado Department of Education when they have successfully completed the ALP SED program and achieved a passing score the Special Education PLACE assessment.

Tuition and Grading:
The 2012-2013 ALP SED licensure only tuition is $4,725 + approximately $600 in fees* for each year of the two year ALP SED program, for a total tuition & fee cost of approximately $10,650. Through agreements with many school districts, tuition may be payroll deducted. MSU Denver ALP SED students are eligible to apply for financial aid.

MSU Denver's Alternative Licensure Program does not charge out-of-state tuition, so the tuition rate will be the same regardless of residency status.
Criteria for grades includes regular attendance, completion of all class assignments, participation, satisfactory completion of a Teacher Work Sample and assigned portfolio artifacts and demonstrated proficiency on all benchmarks on the Performance-Based Standards for Colorado Special Education Generalist.
