Dr. Sheila Thompson currently serves as Associate Vice President for Curriculum and Academic Effectiveness at Metropolitan State University of Denver.  In that role she oversees master’s program development, program assessment, accreditation, program review, curriculum, and faculty development. Previously, she was Director of Student Learning Assessment at Metropolitan State University of Denver.  She has approximately fifteen years experience facilitating program and course assessment.  She also has two years experience as Director of Institutional Research at a research extensive institution.

Her PhD is in Higher Education Administration, with a focus on assessment, pedagogy, and curricula.  Her teaching experience includes a seven year stint teaching courses for Biological Sciences majors and non-majors and four years teaching courses in a Higher Education Administration graduate program.

Recent publications include “Developing an Assessment Plan for a Professional Program: A Collaborative Success” (co-authored with a colleague from the Department of Industrial Design), “Fostering Students’ Complex Problem Solving Skills: A Glimpse at the Reflective Judgment Model,” “Creating a Student Centered Learning Environment at the University of Denver” (co-authored with colleagues in the Department of Engineering), and a co-authored chapter titled “Qualitative and Quantitative Methods as Complementary Assessment Tools” in the Handbook of Research on Assessment Technologies, Methods, and Applications in Higher Education.

Her scholarly interests lie in the areas of assessment of student learning outcomes, curriculum development, general education, and reflective judgment.  She serves as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission.
