History

Metro State Flight Team is a member of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) that has its roots in the 1930s. It has grown since then to be a great national competition for over seventy colleges.

Our organization joined NIFA in 1970 and has competed consistently every year. In 1980 the flight team branched off from Alpha Eta Rho, a local aviation fraternity, and became a college class as well as a student organization. Below are some historical highlights:

May 2012: Metro State Flight Team places 14thin Nationals at Kansas State University, Salina Airport.

October 2011: Metro State Flight Team places 2ndin Regionals at Rangely Airport and qualifies for National competition.

May 2011: Metro State brings home the Loening Trophy from Nationals at Ohio State University. Tommy Staudt places 2nd in the Ground Trainer Event and he and Shaun Lee place 3rdin the Message Drop competition. Emily Applegate receives the Women's Achievement Award.

October 2010: Metro State Flight Team places 2nd in Regionals at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. Tommy wins 1st place in the Ground Trainer Event, and he and Shaun Lee take 1st place for Message Drop. Shaun is the top scoring contestant. Kayla Graham places 6th in the Manual Flight Computer Competition. Eric Wilkins places 2nd in Aircraft Identification. Shaun Lee and Nick Marchese place in the top five high-scoring contestants in the Ground Trainer Event. Shaun Lee and Josh Falgoust place 4th in Crew Resource Management. Shaun Lee and Eric Wilkins place 4th and 5th, respectively, in the Preflight Event.

May 2008: Zach Pegg places 5thnationally in Ground Trainer out of 30 colleges

2007: Metro places 3rdoverall at regional SAFECON

2007: Eric Peterson wins Top Scoring Male Contestant

2006-07: Eric Peterson wins 1stplace in Ground Trainer Event

2006: Dominique Robnet wins Top Female Pilot

2005-06: Metro wins American Airlines Safety Award
