Summer Wilderness Outdoor Orientation Program
Metropolitan State University is proud to offer the new SWOOP, the Summer Wilderness Outdoor Orientation Program for incoming MSUDenver freshmen.
Learn in Colorado’s beautiful wilderness classroom where adventure activities make up the lesson plan! Participants will engage in introductory level backcountry backpacking in the Golden Gate Canyon Park. The activities, location, and facilitation of the program will help students become comfortable in situations outside of their normal comfort zone. Student will participate in activities that will help them develop such social skills and qualities as teamwork, communication, trust, self-efficacy, and many others. Group discussions and reflection time will allow students the ability to think critically about their experiences, feelings, and thoughts and to share them with their peers in a safe, respectful setting. Trip leaders, current college students, will help translate how these outdoor experiences and skills can help them succeed in their college career.

Interest Meetings
If you think this program might be for you but you're still not sure, come to one of our interest meetings where every aspect of the trip will be described, questions answered, and get a chance to meet the trip leaders!

Pre-Trip Workshops
Already signed up? Have questions about your gear or want to learn some outdoor skills before the trip? Our pre-trip workshops address everything from “Are these shoes okay to wear?” to “How to I use a backpacking stove to cook my food?” Bring questionable items so our experienced trip leaders can assess whether it will be appropriate for the trip. If there is something you want to learn, email us at swoop@msudenver.edu with your topics so we can prepare a top-notch skills clinic for you!
