Resources From Past Workshops & Events

The Center for Faculty Development offers several workshops each semester on a range of topics relevant to teaching and learning, scholarship, and work-life issues.  All workshops are interactive, and most are designed for faculty to leave with at least a partially developed product.  While there is no substitute for actually attending workshops, many faculty may find useful information within the slide decks and handouts.  The learning objectives described for each workshop will help you to find the workshop materials most relevant to your faculty development needs.

Designing Active Learning Activities

Following this workshop, participants will:

  • Be able to assess and identify their individual comfort level with active learning;
  • Establish for themselves specific steps to make learning more active in their classes.

Defining Course Learning Objectives

Workshop participants will:

  • Understand the reasons for periodically reviewing and revising course learning objectives (LO’s).
  • Become familiar with the process for revising LO’s, as stated on the regular syllabi.
  • Utilize a variety of tools and resources to define LO’s.
  • Draft at least one measurable LO.

Dealing with Difficult Encounters

Following this workshop participants will develop a handful of tools for getting through and, when possible, directly addressing and ameliorating difficult encounters with people.

New Faculty Orientation

New faculty participating in this workshop will:

  • Experience some approaches to teaching that will help them move away from an emphasis on lecture only.
  • Discover the faculty development resources available to them.
  • Relate faculty development to their own desires and needs.

Faculty participants will:

  • Review their syllabi from different perspectives.
  • Evaluate what they want to accomplish with their syllabi.
  • Assess which changes they can adopt to improve their syllabi.
  • Begin developing those changes.

Teaching First Year Students at Metro State

Understanding who our first-year students are is a first step to developing meaningful learning experiences for them.  Participants in this workshop will:

  • Become familiar with the profile of students entering the FYS program.
  • Apply knowledge about undergraduate intellectual development and learning styles to their FYS course designs.
  • Evaluate and determine appropriate course objectives and learning activities.
