Counseling Center Groups, Personal Growth, Diversity, and Academic Skills Workshops, Spring 2013

 

 

Spring Semester 2013 Groups

To sign up for a group, call (303) 556-3132 or drop by the Counseling Center in Tivoli 651.

Groups require a brief meeting with the group facilitator(s) prior to their start.  To participate in a workshop, you may just show up.  All groups and workshops are open to MSU Denver students only.  There is no charge for participation.  All groups and workshops will take place in Tivoli 651 unless otherwise indicated.

 

 

Interpersonal Processing/Experiential Therapy Group I:

This group is designed for individuals who desire personal growth and insight who want to be able to relate better with others. The goal of this group is to help facilitate self-growth and enhance interpersonal effectiveness.  Typical presenting concerns of group members include: 

Frequent feelings of frustration, loneliness or dissatisfaction in relationships

Difficulties trusting others

Difficulties forming close/meaningful friendships

Feeling pressured to please others

Difficulties communicating one’s thoughts, feelings, and needs directly

Being controlling (or easily controlled) in relationships

Experiencing anxiety in social situations

• Struggles with self-esteem

 

Days/Times:  Thursdays, 1:00-2:30 PM

Dates:  Continuous through the semester.

Women Survivors Group:

This group will focus on the aftereffects of traumatic experiences on women survivors. It will combine education regarding the lasting effects of trauma focusing on physical and sexual abuse, as well as provide opportunities to process and explore a range of issues for survivors. The focus will be on developing trusting, safe relationships and how to deal with the continuing impact of trauma. Other topics explored include guilt, difficulty with others, and how to handle potential triggers.

Dates: February 5– April 30, 2013

Social Anxiety Group:

Do you feel uneasy or anxious in social situations?  Do you avoid parties and big group gatherings because they scare you?  Do you feel that anxiety is getting in the way of being the person you want to be?  You are not alone.  Anxiety is part of the human experience, but sometimes it can become too intense, too gripping, or too disruptive.  This eight-week semi-structured group will provide a safe place to explore experiences of anxiety in social situations, teach practical methods of dealing with these concerns, and increase feelings of self-efficacy and self-confidence.

 

Days/Times:  Tuesdays, 3:00-4:30 PM

Dates:  February 5– March 26, 2013

Mindfulness Meditation:

Does life feel too fast-paced?  Are you always thinking about what just happened or what will happen next?  This open mindfulness meditation group will meet throughout the semester to help students slow down and connect with the present moment.  Each week, a brief description of mindfulness meditation will be given for new members and then group will practice the meditation in brief and longer sittings.  No prior experience with mindfulness meditation is required. Come relax with us!

Dates:  Starts January 16, 2013

Women’s Relationships:

This eight-session workshop will explore unhealthy behavior patterns most often occurring in relationships, and how these patterns can be disruptive to a woman’s emotional and spiritual growth, safety, and quality of life.  Learn red flags to look for, the signs of less optimal dating choices, the types of unhealthy relationships, and learn to make healthier dating choices by evaluating past relationships.  The first 8 women to RSVP and complete the workshop will receive a copy of the book utilized in the workshop.

Veterans Workshop Series:

 

Veterans in Pursuit of a Degree:  Navigating the University Culture:   

Success in the classroom goes beyond the classroom only.  This workshop is designed to help Veteran Students identify sources of stress that may be impacting their academic achievements and how to make meaning of the university culture.

Deployment Stress:

Deployment can bring positive opportunities and can be exciting, but has it’s share of struggles and challenges.  This workshop will provide the opportunity for Veteran Students to process a variety of issues that come with deployment.

The Impact of TBI on the Veteran Student:  Identification of Symptoms and Resources for Further Help 

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can result in many neurological and physiological problems including memory, focus, and consciousness.  This workshop will help to familiarize you of debilitating effects and how to develop coping strategies.

Academic Workshops:

 

Managing Test Anxiety

This workshop is designed to assist students who are typically well prepared for tests, but who lose confidence and blank things out on the day of the exam. You will learn specific strategies to reduce your test anxiety.

Procrastination & Perfectionism:

We all do it sometimes.  Put things off until the last minute.  Do every task on our list except the one we really need to get done.  Get stuck on a writing assignment because we can’t come up with the perfect starting sentence.  Choose to do something more fun rather than the thing we “should” be doing.  If you find that you procrastinate to the point of extreme stress, or struggle to make deadlines, or get bogged down in perfectionism, then this workshop is for you!  Come and learn techniques to escape and avoid these traps.

Understanding ADHD:   

Are you challenged with staying on task, focusing or with organization? Any of these could be related to ADHD. The goal of this workshop is to provide some basic information about ADHD, such as, how do I know it is ADHD?   Also, how is life different living with ADHD?

Personal Effectiveness Workshops:

 

Bystander Empowerment:You Have the Power to Make a Difference:

What would you do?  What would you do if you witnessed someone engaging in behavior that you knew was unhealthy, illegal or potentially dangerous, hurtful or harmful to others?  This workshop discusses the concept of the bystander effect and how it can take less than a minute to alter someone else’s life. Bystanders have the power to stop discrimination, harassment and assault and to get help for those who have been harmed. Learn how you could have a positive impact on those around you.

Understanding Bipolar Illness:

This workshop will provide information on some of the causes of bipolar illness, typical signs and symptoms, and recommendations for treatment. Participants will have a chance to discuss their own experiences with bipolar, some of the typical challenges and how to cope with some of the ups and downs.

Fragile Friendships and “Frenemies”:  Relational Aggression and Its Impact:

Any friendship can have its ups and downs.  Some friendships are significantly more stable than others.  Some friends readily rely on each and experience mutual sharing, support and listening while other friendships can be more complicated and draining.  Perhaps you have that one friend who seems more like an enemy than a friend.  Do you constantly butt heads or get pulled into their drama?  This workshop discusses the concept of relational aggression, how to spot it, how to avoid it and what to do when faced with it.

Anger:           

Do you ever find yourself becoming angry about getting angry? Anger is a part of everyone’s life, but if you get angry over being angry, it may be too much a part of your life!  This workshop will offer tips on how to live with anger in a way that is healthy and not counterproductive to your own life goals.

Loneliness:

Anyone can feel lonely.  Loneliness is not about the number of people around you, it is about a perceived sense of social isolation, and the feeling that you are not satisfied with the interpersonal   relations that you do have.  This presentation will review a recent study which tracked 5,000 people over 10 years.  We will explore these findings as well as ways to reduce loneliness and increase your personal connection with others.

International Alliances:

This workshop is intended to bring international students at MSU Denver together to discuss their experiences.  What are the challenges in adjusting to living and going to school in a foreign country?  What are the things that have helped you through this experience?  What advice would you give to other international students and to campus faculty and administrators working with international students?  Come together to share your experiences, learn about international adjustment, and hear the stories of others!

Dream Interpretation:

For as long as people have been dreaming, they have been trying to make sense and meaning out of their dreams.  Have you ever wondered what your dreams mean?  What they say about you and your conscious waking life?  Then come to this interactive workshop, where all participants will get to share dreams they have had, and we will try to interpret and make sense of them.  We will also talk about sleep physiology, sleep talking and sleep walking, common images and themes in dreams, etc.

This workshop will provide tips, skills, and strategies for striking a balance between life pressures, academic stress, and managing a disability for college students.  Coping strategies, self-care, and empowerment for voicing your needs will be covered.  This workshop will also provide an opportunity to share your experiences with others who may be encountering similar challenges.  Please join us!

Eating Disorder Awareness and Screening – Monday February 25, 2013   11:00 a.m.-2:00 PM

 

Alcohol Awareness and Screening – Tuesday, April 11, 2013   11:00 a.m.-2:00 PM

 

The Counseling Center will be providing free screenings for eating and/or body image issues as part of National Eating Disorders Awareness week as well as Alcohol Use as part of National Alcohol Awareness Week. Join us for a free screening, and to find out if you need further professional consultation. These events are open to the entire community; no student enrollment is necessary for participation. Mental Health Professionals will be available to answer your related questions and address your concerns. There will be lots of resources and FREE refreshments. Both events will be held in the Tivoli Multicultural Lounge.
