Campus Highlights
The name Auraria is derived from the Latin word for gold.
Three separate educational institutions - Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and University of Colorado at Denver - share space on the 175-acre urban commuter campus. The campus has the largest population of all institutions of higher education in the State of Colorado (47,700 in 2006). The Board of Directors of the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) manages the physical facilities and non-academic functions of the campus.
Auraria is the site of the city's oldest settlement, and preservation of historic buildings in the area are a major project. Buildings include Emmanuel Gallery, St. Cajetan’s Church, Victorian houses along Ninth Street including the Golda Meir House (Ninth Street Park), St. Elizabeth's Church, and Tivoli Brewery are some of the projects which have been completed in recent years.
The campus is located a short distance from the Colorado State Capital, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the Colorado Convention Center, the downtown Denver business district and the Pepsi Center. The campus is serviced by light rail and public transportation. More information about Metro Denver can be found at The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.
