Conference Frequently Asked Questions
Last year the Metro State University Department of English held its first Undergraduate English Conference, an all - day event featuring the exciting variety of writing and scholarship that is created by undergraduate students working in areas of English studies. The Conference was a great success, with over thirty students presenting research and creative work, and a key-note presentation by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Donna Dewey. We aim to make this year's Conference an even bigger success — one that offers students working in areas of English the opportunity to present their research and creative work, to engage in lively discussion, and to meet other local undergraduates in their field. We invite undergraduate students from both Metro State and other area institutions to submit a proposal or to register to attend sessions. The conference will take place in early spring on the Auraria Campus (place and date TBA soon!).
During the Conference, panels will run throughout the day, interspersed with roundtable discussion or a presentation by a nationally acclaimed scholar, writer, or filmmaker. Presenters and attendees can look forward to participating in spirited discussions on topics from our six areas of focus: literature, film studies, linguistics, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and English education. Our mission is to provide a space where local and regional undergraduate students can share the important work they’ve done in the field of English, and to present a program that highlights both intellectual diversity and diversity in culture, ethnicity, gender, and experience.
To be considered for the conference, please be prepared to submit a 400-500 word abstract of a scholarly paper, or a 400 - 500 word excerpt of a creative piece (or 1 poem, if submitting for poetry). The work proposed should be appropriate for a 15-minute presentation. Creative writing can take any number of forms, including poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, and screenwriting. While topics can be on anything related to our six featured areas of English studies, we are particularly interested in papers, research, and creative work that addresses the topic of diversity, be it centered on race, gender, ethnicity, sexual identity, class, or so forth.
Undergraduates who would like to present a paper should submit a proposal using the online submission form by the December 1, 2012 deadline.
