How to Check a PDF File for Tags

In order for a PDF File to be accessible for screen readers it must contain structural “tags”. Structural tags basically define the layout and the content of the document such as paragraphs, tables, headings, lists and images.

Step 1. Open the PDF file. Make sure it opens with the Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat 

Step 2.

Click on the File menu and choose Properties
Step 3. A Document Properties window will open. Make sure you click on the Description tab .

On the bottom it will show Advanced features.
If the document is tagged it should say:
Tagged PDF: Yes. Look at the example below:

Step 4. Click on the OK button .
Step 5.

If the document does not contain tags it will say: Tagged PDF: No
in this case if you have the original Word file on your computer, open it and follow the instructional tutorials provided for more information.
