Executive Function

Self-regulation, often called Executive Function, is defined as a core set of skills including:Inhibitory Control, Working Memory, and Cognitive Flexibility. Self-regulation influences both cognitive processes like learning something new, but also social emotional skills, such as delaying gratification and having self-control. Self-regulation or Executive Function are required whenever going "on automatic" would not suffice or would be detrimental when you have to learn or act intentionally. Tied to the development of the prefrontal cortex, executive functions are developing during the early childhood period.
