Kindergarten Student Work
In Kindergarten, children use Learning Plans that serve the same self-regulatory function as Play Plans. The Learning Plan allows children to plan the work they will accomplish in the independent activity centers. Each activity in the center contains a work product the children must produce and place in a folder. Children work in pairs so that the “study buddy” helps the child remember what they are going to do, the rules for looking up the answers, and checks to make sure the partner has completed the activity.

This class was doing a study of the ocean, and in doing so read books about oysters. Children were then asked to write facts that they remembered from the book. Many children recalled different facts and illustrated what they wrote. The children are all in different stages of writing development. (See section on Scaffolded Writing) Some have learned voice-line match, and many have begun to incorporate word patterns into their writing. Invented (estimated) spelling shows children’s understanding of phonemes in words and is correlated with higher reading achievement scores in later grades. This estimated spelling is replaced with more conventional spelling when children begin to learn word patterns and receive formal spelling instruction in first and second grades.

It is important to note that the children all did their writing without the support of any "word walls" or teacher writing on the chalk board. The writing on their work represents ideas that came from their own minds.
