Kindergarten

The kindergarten program is unique in that it integrates the school’s or district’s existing purchased math and literacy curricula with specific Tools of the Mind activities and teaching techniques. Specific details about techniques and this integration are presented in workshops.

The first year emphasizes the management of the classroom, the development of self-regulation and literacy development. The 60- or 90-minute literacy block is highlighted, and workshops focus on helping teachers create rich dramatization centers (in the first semester) and rich literacy centers (in the second semester). Math, science, and social studies are also included.

The second year emphasizes individualization, better accommodation of children with special needs, and assessment of child learning. There is increased emphasis on math and science in Year Two. The specific details of professional development process are flexible and are negotiated with the district.
