Transfer Students
If you are a transfer student, we encourage
you to see a Financial Aid Counselor at Metro State as early as
possible and to review our Website and become familiar with your
rights and responsibilities regarding financial aid.
Transfer students who apply for
financial aid must also apply for admission and be accepted into
a regular degree-seeking, licensure or certificate program at Metro
State before any consideration or decision on financial aid can
be made. However, you should not wait for formal acceptance to Metro
State to apply for financial aid. You should apply early for both
financial aid and admission.
To apply for federal and state
aid you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) or the Renewal Application for Federal Student Aid. You
can complete the electronic FAFSA online at
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
If you prefer to complete a paper application, you may request a
paper application from the Office of Financial Aid.
The FAFSA is available at college financial aid offices and through high school counselors. There is no charge to submit the FAFSA. You must list Metropolitan State College of Denver (School Code 001360) as one of your school choices so we will receive your information without delay. You may visit our Applying for Financial Aid Section of the Website to learn more about the FAFSA.
By completing the FAFSA, you will be considered for the following programs based on the availability of funds:
Application DeadlineYou should mail a completed and signed
FAFSA to the processor or complete an online FAFSA as early as possible
each year. The FAFSA is available after January 1st of each year
for the following academic year. Example: You may submit a 2006/2007
FAFSA beginning January 1, 2006.
If you plan to transfer to Metro State in the middle of the year
(i.e. Spring semester) and you applied for financial aid from your
previous school, you should begin the process of applying for aid
at Metro State around mid-October by doing one of the following:
- Complete a Metro State Form in our office. You will need the PIN from your Student Aid Report (SAR).
- Request that a duplicate Student Aid Report (SAR) from the processor be sent to Metro State by calling 1-800-433-3243.
If you are transferring from another school, your financial aid will not transfer with you to Metro State. If you received a Federal Pell Grant and are transferring mid-year, you may be able to receive all or part of your remaining grant at Metro State.
If you borrowed a Federal Student Loan
for the academic year, and are transferring mid-year, you must call
your lender and cancel any remaining portion of your loan at your
other school. You must also cancel your loan with the school you
were attending. Then, you must reapply for a loan for the spring
semester at Metro State. If you borrowed the maximum annual
loan amount during the fall semester at your previous school,
you will not be able to borrow a loan for the spring semester at
Metro State. Your loan is subject to the annual loan limit.
Other factors may influence your ability to borrow and the amount you may borrow:
- If the loan period at your previous school overlaps with your loan period at Metro State, it is possible that you will not be eligible to borrow until the next semester.
- When you transfer credits from one school to another, it is possible that not all of your credits will be accepted. This may affect your class level (sophomore or junior status), and you may only be able to borrow the lesser amount of the sophomore level.
- The award process for transfer students is not final until credits from all previously attended schools are evaluated. The number of credits accepted by Metro State affects the final loan amount awarded to you. You should expect a 4-6 week wait for your credits to be evaluated after your academic transcripts are received by the Registrar’s Office.
- You must complete a first-time borrower’s Entrance Interview at Metro State even if you have previous loans from another school. Once your loan has been processed by the Office of Financial Aid, you will be required to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) with your loan lender. You will be notified via your Metroconnect email account when it is time to complete the MPN.
