General Information

Outside Resources

Any type of monies that may be used to assist in your educational expenses can affect your financial aid eligibility. Benefits such as Veteran's benefits, sponsorship, and/or vocational rehabilitation benefits can affect your eligibility. Please notify our office if you plan to receive any "outside resources."

Veteran's Benefits
Please visit the Veteran's Services Website for information on Veteran's Benefits at Metro State College of Denver.

Americorps Education Benefits
In order to redeem your Americorps Education Benefits, please register online through the Americorps Online Payment System. On this site, login and request the amount of benefits you would like to use toward your education. You must be enrolled in classes at the time you submit your request. You cannot be on Financial Aid Suspension and therefore must be in compliance with the Office of Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

Correspondence Classes

Metro State students who take correspondence classes should be aware of the limitations concerning financial aid. The correspondence program allows one year from the time of original enrollment to complete each class, but if you are receiving financial aid, you must meet all of the conditions for the Office of Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP) during each semester you receive aid or you risk being put on financial aid suspension. This generally means that you must complete your correspondence classes within the semester that the classes appear on your registration record.

You will be awarded financial aid based on your total enrollment. Your enrollment may include any combination of correspondence, online, extended campus and main campus classes. Your aid will be prorated to reflect your actual enrollment if you are enrolled in less than 12 credit hours as of census date.

REGISTERING FOR CORRESPONDENCE CLASSES
Students may register for correspondence courses over the Internet at http://metroconnect.mscd.edu/. Information about the availability of classes is found in the Class Schedule for each semester.

Check with the experts at 303-721-1313 or 303-450-5111 for complete information about correspondence study. Remember, although you have one year to complete a correspondence course, according to the policy governing correspondence classes, you are considered registered for that course only in the semester that you initially register for it. You must complete it during that semester if you are receiving financial aid or you could be subject to financial aid suspension based on the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP).

Study Abroad

If you are planning to participate in a Metro State Faculty led approved study abroad program, you MAY qualify for additional Federal Stafford, PLUS or Alternative Loans to cover the high costs associated with these programs. If the program is during a term you have aid, aid received must first be used to help cover Tuition and Fees assessed to your student account. Any remaining aid (refund) may be used to pay the remaining Study Abroad Program costs.

To qualify for any aid your financial aid file must be complete at the time of applying and at the time of disbursement of aid. To apply for Alternative Loans you may not need to file the FAFSA, but may need to follow and qualify under Financial Aid Regulations such as SAP.

The Study Abroad Loan Attachment Form (SLOAN - available in our office) will have to be completed to notify our office of your needs for additional aid. Note that the cost of the program increases your student budget, and you must apply with the proper loan applications. The Federal Stafford Loan Acceptance Form (FSLA), Parent PLUS Loan or Alternative Loan application must be attached to the SLOAN Form. The loan period must be for the semester you are participating in the program.

Things to Remember About the Study Abroad Program

  • Financial aid cannot be released until the first day of classes based on Metro State class schedule. If you need aid to cover deposits/application fees you may have to cover these costs.
  • You must make arrangements for payment to the coordinator directly from your financial aid refund. Remember aid covers tuition and fees first.
  • We will always attempt to have your loan ready to release prior to your departure. However, we cannot guarantee your funds will be ready before you leave.
  • If you depart prior to the beginning of a normal semester (i.e. semester break), you may request financial aid refund checks be mailed to you, through the Cashier's Office.
  • Dependent students may have their parents apply for a Federal Parent PLUS Loan.
  • There are various alternative loan programs that are tailored to fit a student’s needs. Information and applications for some of these loan programs can be obtained in our office. At this time, all alternative funds arrive via check and require a Power of Attorney to release the funds to anyone other than the student borrower once tuition and fees are paid.
  • You may want to give someone authority to check your financial aid file while you are participating in the Study Abroad Program. Before you leave the country, you must submit the FERPA Form to our office to designate a release of information to the third party of your choice.
  • The program coordinator will register you in the appropriate courses.

Please see the Office of Financial Aid to determine your loan eligibility. You will receive an increase in your budget only once per Study Abroad Program.

Aerospace Program

As a student in the Aerospace Program, you may qualify to use your financial aid to help pay for the high costs associated with flying. All aid received must first be used to help cover tuition and fees assessed to your student account. Any remaining aid (refund) may be used to cover educational costs (flying).

To begin your financial aid file, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must complete your financial aid file with the office. To apply for Alternative or PLUS Loans you may not need to file the FAFSA but may need to follow and qualify under Financial Aid Regulations such as Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP). Please check with our office for any additional requirements.

If you plan to enroll in any of the certification professional pilot (actual flight) courses at Metro State, you may qualify for additional Federal Stafford, PLUS or Alternative Loans to help cover the additional costs of these courses. You must submit an Aerospace Loan Attachment (ALOAN) Form along with a Federal Stafford, PLUS or Alternative Loan Application for the current semester that you will enroll in these classes.

Note that these amounts are increases to your student budget for one term only and you must apply with the proper loan applications and ALOAN form. These increases are intended to allow for immediate term funds to have refund monies to complete the requirements for certification.

The following classes and the additional amounts allowed in your student budget have been approved by the Office of Financial Aid:

AES 1500 $8,500 - Private
AES 2500 $7,800 - Instrument
AES 3520 $12,500 - Commercial
AES 4500 $4,300 - Multi-Engine
AES 4510 $5,200 - Flight Instructor, Instrument
AES 4520 $3,200 - Flight Instructor
AES 4530 $4,600 - Flight Instructor, Multi-Engine

*The Aviation Department is the only office that can register you for the listed courses. The budget increase and aid eligibility will not be processed without registration in one of these classes.

You may not qualify for enough Federal Stafford Loans to cover the entire costs you incur with these courses. Dependent students may apply for Parent PLUS Loans. Information on Alternative Loan Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid. Please see the Federal Stafford Loan limits.

You may only have your budget increased one time for each class listed above. If you retake a class, we will not be able to consider the costs you incur. These increases are semester specific.

As a result of an Aerospace increase request, we will add the approved course allowance to your student budget in an effort to increase your available loan eligibility. This will in no way increase the eligibility amount set by the Federal Government on Stafford Loan borrowing limits. If you have already borrowed the Federal Stafford maximum loan eligibility for the year, the budget increase will not make any additional funds available for you to borrow in Stafford Loans.

You must apply with a Federal Stafford Loan request form. Annual loan limits for Federal Stafford Loans are:

Computer Budget Increases/Computer Loans

You may be able to have your budget increased to allow for the purchase or upgrade of a computer or computer software. The increase is term specific to give you all funds at once.

Submit a COMP.
Students who have remaining Federal Stafford Loan eligibility for the current academic year may borrow up to $1,800 for the purchase of a computer (including a printer or any other hardware that is compatible with the computer). Each student may have this budget increase only once during their undergraduate education at Metro State.

Submit a COMPU. In addition to the one-time computer budget increase, each student may have a budget increase of up to $500 annually for upgrading the computer hardware or software. A computer upgrade request cannot be utilized in the same academic year as a computer purchase request.

*This computer budget increase will not change or adjust your eligibility for grants or any other current aid.

You must complete a Computer Purchase Request Form and attach a copy of a cost estimate from a store, Internet site or from the individual selling the computer. The cost estimate must provide the cost of the computer and the name and address of the seller. You are required to submit a loan application (FSLA) with your COMP or COMPU form for us to process your loan request. A COMP or COMPU form submitted without a loan application (FSLA) can be put on hold or waived. You can submit a Federal Stafford, Federal PLUS, or Alternative Loan application with your request.

The Office of Financial Aid is required to follow Stafford annual and aggregate loan requirements. If you do not have sufficient Stafford Loan eligibility to pay the entire cost of your computer, your budget increase request may be denied for the current year and you may apply again in a subsequent year. If you are applying for additional aid in PLUS or Alternative Loans, you must submit the applications with the Computer Purchase Request Form.
