FAQs

General

Why did MSU Denver change its name?
The University pursued a name change to elevate the institution’s status to match its current reality as Colorado’s preferred choice for Colorado undergraduates and to eliminate confusion among prospective employers and other members of the community who perceive the institution as a community college. The name change to Metropolitan State University of Denver is intended to raise the value of MSU Denver degrees for our alumni. Read about the Strategic Name Initiative.

When did the new name take effect?
The new name, Metropolitan State University of Denver, became official on July 1, 2012. Because of the enormity of the undertaking to change the name on so many levels, the University will take one year to make the full transition. All materials must be changed by June 30, 2013.

Why did the University change the shortened version of its name from Metro State to MSU Denver?
People will still use Metro State conversationally, but MSU Denver incorporates the “U,” which emphasizes our new university status, and “Denver,” which refers to our urban location. A survey asking faculty, staff, students and alumni their preference for a shortened name was evenly divided between MSU Denver and Metro State.

Can we still use Metro State?
Yes, we will still use Metro State colloquially, and Metro State will still be on our athletic uniforms along with the informal logo.

How will we pay for the name change?
You may pay for worn-out items and the replacement of depleted consumables such as letterhead and envelopes out of General Fund budgets. Other costs associated with the name change will be paid for with Indirect Cost Recovery funds. No state appropriations or student tuition monies will be used for name-change expenses.

Where can I get an MSU Denver T-shirt?
The Auraria Bookstore is authorized to sell licensed MSU Denver merchandise.
