Assessment

Assessment Models - Embedded Assessment

Embedded assessments use work students are already doing in their courses to assess specific learning outcomes. This can include having a second reader of a paper or having common assignments across sections. Faculty members can identify the assignments which already address specific outcomes and report those grades to a course coordinator who gathers the data, reports it to the Director of Assessment, and works with all faculty teaching the course to plan how to improve student learning.

Advantages

  • Use work students are already doing for assessment
  • Save time and effort for faculty
  • Ensure quality of effort by students
  • Take disciplinary differences into account
  • Have face validity
  • Allow for departmental and faculty autonomy while encouraging college-wide cooperation

Potential Problems

  • Require a good deal of coordination
  • Can be labor-intensive to score
  • Can require solid rubrics and training of reviewers
