Assessment
Assessment Models - Embedded Assessment
Embedded assessments use work students are already doing in their courses to assess specific learning outcomes. This can include having a second reader of a paper or having common assignments across sections. Faculty members can identify the assignments which already address specific outcomes and report those grades to a course coordinator who gathers the data, reports it to the Director of Assessment, and works with all faculty teaching the course to plan how to improve student learning.
Advantages
- Use work students are already doing for assessment
- Save time and effort for faculty
- Ensure quality of effort by students
- Take disciplinary differences into account
- Have face validity
- Allow for departmental and faculty autonomy while encouraging college-wide cooperation
Potential Problems
- Require a good deal of coordination
- Can be labor-intensive to score
- Can require solid rubrics and training of reviewers
