Local tests are developed by an institution to measure their own students’ learning.

Advantages

• Have face validity for institution’s conditions
• Reflect that institution’s culture
• Student effort strong if course-embedded
• Are immediately relevant and useful

Potential Problem

• Sometimes focus on the surface
• Usually don’t have norms for reference
• Test must be piloted to help with ambiguous terms, reliability and validity
• Students may be threatened by them
