The Center for Individualized Learning offers three programs: the Individualized Degree Program (IDP), Credit for Prior Learning options and Metro Meritus. The center also assists returning adult students who are close to degree completion.

Individualized Degree Program

The Individualized Degree Program (IDP) offers students the opportunity to design majors or minors to meet educational goals that cannot be met by other majors/minors described in the MSU Denver catalog. Students work closely with a faculty mentor, the appropriate department chair and an adviser from the center to develop their degree plans, drawing on courses relevant to the core concept or theme from across the university. Thematically relevant transfer credits are also applicable to IDP programs. Students interested in International Studies may pursue an IDP with a concentration in International Studies. This is an individualized major with a required core of six courses. Beyond the core, students may select courses from across the university, in consultation with faculty and center advisers, to create an International Studies program focused on a particular area or field of interest. Informational sessions for IDP options are offered throughout the year with both day and early-evening sessions available.

Credit for Prior Learning

Through Credit for Prior Learning options, students may earn academic credit for university-level learning gained outside of the classroom. Prior learning credit options at MSU Denver include national examinations (CLEP), departmental credit by examination and portfolio assessment. Credit is also available through the American Council on Education Guides for non-accredited training, including military training. Prior learning credit through one or more of the options listed is available in many academic departments. Informational sessions for Prior Learning Credit options are offered throughout the year with both day and early-evening sessions available.

Metro Meritus

Metro Meritus provides adults age 60 and older the oppor-tunity to audit courses on a non-credit, space-available basis at no cost.
