There are many ways to finance your university education. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships administers the student loan, grant, Work-Study and scholarship programs. All students who apply may be eligible for some type of financial assistance. The largest of the financial aid programs is the student loan program, including Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) and Federal PLUS loans. While students are finding it increasingly difficult to attend college without loans, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships strongly recommends that students do not borrow more than they need. Many students choose to work to cover living expenses rather than take student loans.

To Apply for Financial Aid

Apply early. To apply for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We strongly suggest you go online (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and process your FAFSA by mid-February. MSU Denver’s Title IV School Code is 001360. You may still apply for financial aid after this date, but awards are typically limited to federal Pell Grants and student loans. This process takes about six weeks and must be done each academic year. In response to the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), and we will receive an electronic record to begin processing your file. If all information is correct, please keep it for your records. You must be admitted to MSU Denver as a student seeking a degree, certificate or licensure in order for our office to award financial aid to you.

Short-Term Student Loan Program

The Short-Term Student Loan Program offers short-term (30-day) loans of no more than $200 to qualified MSU Denver students. Short-term loans serve as a crucial financial bridge for students awaiting their financial aid checks at the beginning of each semester. Access to short-term loan funds enables students to purchase needed textbooks and other course materials in order to keep up with their classes, and may help students meet other unexpected financial expenses that occur throughout the term. Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, or visit our website for additional information and to download our short-term loan application.

First-Time Borrowers Book Loan

303-352-6384 • SSB Area 6

The First-Time Borrowers Book Loan program offers short-term loans to qualified MSU Denver students. Book loans are available only to first-time borrowers of the Federal Stafford Loan Program who fall under the 30-day delay for their first loan disbursement. Only students who have a fully processed Federal Stafford Loan, including entrance interview and master promissory note, and are designated as a first-time borrower with a delayed disbursement will be considered for a book loan. Access to first-time borrower book loan funds enables students to purchase needed textbooks and other course materials in order to keep up with their classes. Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
