2006 Shades of Genius Honorees Renee A. Cousins, M.D., Terri L. Richardson M.D. and Jandel T. Allen - Davis, M.D. The Health Center at Auraria is committed to meeting the needs of our diverse campus community and strives to employ personnel who are knowledgeable, sensitive and caring of all people. Student Health Advocates for Diversity in Education and Services (SHADES) is the foundation of the Health Center’s commitment to diversity. This program seeks to embrace diversity of all types through a variety of educational opportunities. Each year the Health Center honors individuals from diverse backgrounds for their contributions to science, medicine, education and/or their impact on a specific population. This annual recognition is known as the “SHADES of Genius” program. A primary goal of this program is to present role models for our youth to aspire to, in the hopes of encouraging academic pursuit in underrepresented fields of study.
The SHADES initiative is designed to educate and recognize the special health needs of our diverse campus community by offering a variety of educational seminars and financially supporting diversity initiatives sponsored by campus organizations.
A SHADES scholarship has been established and is awarded annually to assist students in their education. For more information about any component of the SHADES initiative, please contact any of the Health Center’s administrative staff at 303-556-2525.
Diversity and Multi-Cultural Competency Education
Health Center at Auraria staff actively participate in training programs designed to enhance their level of diversity and multi-cultural competency. These in-service programs are designed to address cultural and human differences/expectations in order to best serve all constituents on the Auraria Campus. This on-going program recognizes the importance of continual personal growth throughout a medical provider’s career and the relevance of human differences in the provision of medical care. By continually improving the level of diversity and cultural competency of our staff, we hope to offer a medical practice that is welcoming and free of discrimination.
Suggestions from our patients for future staff training opportunities and/or ideas for campus-wide diversity programming initiatives are welcomed. Please share your thoughts with one of our medical providers or one of the Health Center’s administrators. Together we can create a stronger and more dynamic campus community that recognizes the value, strength and beauty of our inherent differences.
