The Dr. Furman C. Griffis Endowed Memorial Scholarship Award Description
The purpose of this scholarship is to honor and perpetuate the work of Dr. Furman C. Griffis, who devoted his life to the field of recreation, by assisting a deserving student enrolled in the School of Professional Studies as a Recreation Professions Major in their quest for knowledge in this area. Dr. Furman Griffis, “Griff,” spent thirteen years at North Jeffco Recreation and Park District where he progressed from recreation leader to superintendent of the district. He was involved in the development of the Colorado State Parks Division, the State Lottery, which acquire park and recreation facilities and also with the passage of the “Older Americans Act” of 1965, and the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, of which he was president in 1968. He was also awarded by CPRA the, “Dedication and Lifetime Member” Award for outstanding services to the parks, recreation and leisure service profession.
During his 20 years at Metropolitan State College of Denver, (now Metropolitan State University of Denver), he received many honors such as the “Natural Helper” award in 1990, the “Outstanding Service” award in 1988-89, and the “Certificate of Outstanding Service” in 1973. His work in gaining national accreditation of the Leisure Studies Program in 1990 was a particular highlight in his career.
