Career Information
The B.S. in Human Services provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a variety of entry-level positions in the field of Human Services and Nonprofit Administration.
Addiction Studies: Students in this concentration gain the classes and field hours necessary to apply to become a Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) Level I upon graduation. Students can also complete the classes required by the State for CAC II and III while in the program. The types of agencies where graduates may work include:
- Detoxification Facilities
- D.U.I. Therapeutic Education Programs
- Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment Programs
- Other programs that focus on alcoholism and drug addiction
Domestic Violence Counseling: Students in this concentration gain the knowledge and skills to work with survivors of violence or offenders in settings that include:
- Court-ordered Treatment and Therapeutic Education Programs
- Domestic Violence Shelters
- Programs providing services to survivors of sexual assault and/or childhood sexual abuse
- Victim Assistance Programs
High Risk Youth: Students in this concentration gain the knowledge and skills to work with youth in a variety of settings that include:
- Crisis Intervention
- Drop-out Prevention Programs
- Drug & Alcohol Prevention Programs
- Foster Care
- Gang Prevention & Intervention Programs
- Group Homes
- Juvenile Corrections
- Mentoring Programs
- Juvenile Probation Programs
- Residential Treatment Facilities
- Shelters serving youth
Mental Health Counseling: Students in this concentration gain the knowledge and skills to work with clients in a variety of settings that include:
- Group Homes
- Hospice
- Mentoring Programs
- Nursing Homes
- Programs serving the homeless population
- Residential Treatment Facilities
- Shelters
Nonprofit Studies: Students in this concentration are prepared to work in a variety of administrative and management positions throughout the nonprofit sector that include:
- Development Officer
- Executive Director
- Grant writer/Fundraiser
- Program Coordinator
- Volunteer Coordinator
If you are interested in becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, a School Counselor, a Marriage and Family Counselor, or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, you must complete the appropriate master's degree. Career Services offers support for students exploring career options and preparing for job searches. They sponsor a variety of workshops on career topics and individualized support for resume and cover letter development, as well as provide an opportunity to do a mock interview to prepare for job interviews.
