Full IRB Review

Research protocols requiring review by the full board are those that potentially present high or moderately high risk to human participants. Common examples of research requiring full board review are studies involving prisoners, persons with undocumented status, persons involved in illegal activities, incarcerated youth, among others. Whether a particular Request for Review will require full board review depends on the nature and context of the particular study.

All Requests for Review, from both faculty and students, involving high or moderately high risk for research participants will require review by the full IRB. The full IRB meets once a month, but approval may require modifications and multiple reviews. Investigators are advised to submit Request for Review of high or moderately high-risk research well before they intend to begin their research.

The Office of Human Research Protections dictates the protocol for Full IRB meetings. The content of the meeting notes are also regulated by OHRP. Unless a consultant or investigator has bee invited for discussion, Full IRB meeting are closed to the public. Only Full Board members or their proxies can be present in the room for votes on determinations.

Possible Outcomes of a Full Board Review

There are four possible determinations that may be made for research protocols that are reviewed by the full board. They are as follows: approved without modifications, approved with modifications not requiring resubmission, modifications and resubmission required before determination can be made, and disapproved. Find the actions taken after each of these determinations below.
