Bio
Hello, I am Debbie Gilliard and it is a pleasure to meet you.
I have been teaching full time in the Management Department at MSCD since 1994. Although I have taught a number of Management classes, today I primarily teach MGT 3820 - International Business and MGT 4950 - Strategic Management. I also taught at MSCD from 1987-89 as a part-time Instructor of Accounting.
What is your teaching philosophy?
In the classroom, I hope to instill in students excitement about the business topics that we discuss and relate course information to today's business world. I endeavor to help students in their learning process by stating textbook information in terms that students understand, encourage student questions and comments in class to clarify concepts, and provide tools and knowledge that students can take into the business world.
What is your educational background?
I have a Ph.D. in Management from Arizona State University (1993). I received my MBA from the University of Colorado - Denver and my B.S. in Management from the University of Northern Colorado. In 1987, I became a Certificated Public Accountant.
What is your business work experience?
I worked as an Employee Benefit Accountant in the Trust Department at United Bank of Denver (purchased by Norwest, which has now merged with Wells Fargo). I also worked at Tyson Food headquarters in Arkansas, was office manager with National Home Nursing Services, and a Tax Supervisor at Franchise Accounting Systems. I continue to keep in contact with business people (member of organizations, some consulting/advising, teach seminars, give presentations, member Board of Directors, etc.) to ensure that I know what today's business person is facing in the environment and what actions are being taken. I have also taught a course called "Introduction to World Trade" at the World Trade Center. I am able to discuss international business experiences with students who attend the class.
Have you traveled internationally?
Yes, I have had the pleasure of visiting 40 countries: Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Schenzen province in China, Thailand, Italy, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Greece, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, England, Scotland, Egypt, Morocco, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Brazil, Aruba, Panama, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mexico, and Canada. Please visit my picture gallery to see slide shows of some of my favorite places that I have visited. In many of these countries I have heard presentations from local business people and toured local businesses. I have also had the pleasure of visiting 34 states.
What is your favorite country?I have enjoyed every country I have visited and have marveled at its uniqueness. However, Italy is probably my favorite, perhaps it is the wine and the gelato! But Greece is a close second.
Do you have any vices?
Yes, chocolate. My philosophy is that a little chocolate solves every problem. Well, I also love to eat and try new foods.
What is your favorite television program?
My love of trivial facts leads me to Jeopardy (yes, I tape the program when I am gone during the day) and my fascination with investigative techniques has me watching CSI every Thursday night.
Do you have any hobbies?
Yes, I love to read. Give me a book and I am happy. My favorite type of books right now are suspense, thrillers, and mysteries. I have many favorite authors - - Clancy, Davidson, Braun, Evanovich, Jance, Cussler, White, Matthews, Grisham, Patterson, Kellerman, Hoag, Grafton, Pareski, and the list goes on.
Now that you have met me, please tell me something about yourself.
