Kirk (production) and Sulu (test) Servers Procedures and Guidelines for Mapping to Banner-related folders

Purpose of Document

Use the methods described herein to gain access to all the folders formerly accessed through PuTTY, FileZilla or sftp from UltraEdit on Titan/Mars on the new servers Kirk(prod) and Sulu(test).

Background

For security reasons (BCI audit of 2006), almost all UNIX account holders on Mars and Titan will not be given direct logins to Sulu and Kirk, the new Linux jobsub servers for Banner.  Instead, users will have windows folder access using a product called SAMBA that can be direct connected for one session or mapped as drive letters.  This process will actually be much more user-friendly as cumbersome tools like FileZilla and PuTTY will no longer be needed.

Old Process vs. New Process

The table below depicts typical activities done by Titan UNIX users now and how those activities will be done using the new processes on Kirk(prod) and Sulu (test).

Old Process on Titan

New Process on Kirk

Use PuTTY to view jobsub logs and output.

Map \\kirk\jobsub folder.  Open folder and view logs using Windows Notepad or other text viewer.

Use FileZilla to download a file from /jobsub.

Map \\kirk\jobsub folder.  Copy or drag file to network, etc. folder using Windows methods.

Tapeload process:  Use FileZilla to copy externally received file to /transfer01/… in order to run a tapeload job.

Map appropriate \\kirk\transfer01\... Folder.  Copy or drag file from local PC or network folder to the \transfer01 folder.  Run Banner tapeload job.

Use PuTTY to Encrypt files on Titan and send them to external agencies like College Assist or NelNET.

Use PuTTY to Encrypt files on Kirk and send them to external agencies like College Assist or NelNET.  (requires a Kirk shell account.  If you are not initially given one, contact the AskIT Help Desk at 303-352-7548.)

Use UltraEdit to open files on Titan.

Map the appropriate folder on Kirk using a drive letter.  Open the file from the mapped folder using UltraEdit.

Important files stored in /user1/<userID> folders on Titan.

Unless you are one of the few people getting shell accounts directly on Kirk, you will not be given such a folder on Kirk.  If you need files from your Titan /user1/<userID> folder, please make a help call through the AskIT Help Desk.  The Server Administrator will copy the files to a location you can access.

Connecting to Kirk and Sulu

Below are examples of ways to map folders on the Kirk and Sulu jobsub servers.

Map as a Drive letter

  • Right-click on My Computer icon either on Desktop or from Start Menu

Kirk

  • Select Map Network Drive

Kirk 2

  • On the form presented: enter Drive letter as “J” or some other unmapped drive.
  • Enter the server and folder you want to open in the following format: \\servername\foldername where server name is either “Sulu” for test and “Kirk” for Production.  In the example below, \\sulu\jobsub maps the jobsub folder on the test server as J:.
  • Check the Reconnect at login box if you want this to automatically map the next time you login to your computer.
  • Click Finish

Kirk 3

  • Open My Computer to see the mapped drive.

Kirk 4

Connect one-time through Explorer

  • Click on My Computer icon either on Desktop or from Start Menu

Kirk 5

  • Click on the Address box at the top of the window

Kirk 6

  • Enter the server and folder you want to open in the following format: \\servername\foldername where server name is either “Sulu” for test and “Kirk” for Production.

  • Display of the folder selected:  The user can now view files or even edit files/copy new files, etc., depending on the user’s permissions.

Summary

  • The Titan UNIX server that currently handles Banner Jobsub and tapeload processes is being replaced by the new Kirk server running Linux.  Users with accounts on Titan now will be given permissions to the jobsub and tapeloads folders on Kirk through MS Windows shares and Active Directory.

  • The process for most will be much easier as users will use windows mappings to access their files instead of PuTTY and FileZilla

  • Only a handful of users that encrypt and FTP files directly from Titan now will have accounts on the new server and will continue to use PuTTY and FileZilla.
